If you doubt the importance of air conditioning in West Texas, just drop by the Howard County Library some afternoon.
The library's air conditioning unit, which operated in fits and starts most of this spring, finally gave up the ghost for good recently, leaving the building a tad on the hot side.
Well, more than a tad, it turns out.
âIt's been getting up to 83 or 84 most afternoons, and it'll only get hotter,â County Library Hollis McCright said. âIt's gotten so warm that we've not had much business in the afternoon, and after 4 p.m., we're not getting anyone at all.â
It's no secret people in the Crossroads â and West Texas, for that matter â are crazy for barbecue, and area cooks will get an opportunity to compete for the title of king of the grill Saturday as the local Eagles Lodge presents BBQ Fest.
The cook-off will feature the best and brightest local grillers and smokers as they go head to head in categories including pork ribs, chicken, brisket and jackpot beans, according to coordinator Paul Moran.

SEMINOLE â The rain held off and the wind picked up just enough to cool the crowd who traveled to see the Coahoma Bulldogettes on Monday in their bi-district matchup against the Ladyjackets of Kemit.
Coahoma â who entered the postseason as the third District 3-2A seed â found themselves trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the third when Bree Hilario bunted and reached safely after Kermit's first basemen bobbled the ball. Laurel Nix hit a one-out single that scored Hilario, who had stolen second and third base, tying the game at 2-all.
