Early voting in this year’s political party primaries remained slow this week, as the first week at the polls came to a close Friday with slightly more than 500 ballots cast in Howard County.
Balloting started slow with just 86 ballots — including both Republican and Democratic polls — cast at the polls Monday and another 92 tallied in mail-in ballots, according to County Elections Administrator Saundra Bloom.
Workforce training at Howard College has been underway for quite some time and seems to be continuing to do well, local officials said this past week.
Jimmy Hobdy, director of workforce training at Howard College, presented an update regarding the program during a meeting of the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation.
“We are serving the community through this program in different aspects we didn’t perceive,” Hobdy said.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• MARIE VICKIE HERNANDEZ, 40, of 1605 Oriole St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JUAN PABLO FERDIN, 52, of 310 NW Third St., was arrested on a warrant Friday for dog or cat running at large.
• EURVIN JAMALL WINTERS, 24, of 1900 Martin Luther King Blvd., was arrested Friday on a warrant for failed to maintain financial responsibility, disregard stop sign, driving while license invalid.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• MARY JEAN BERRY, 41, of 903 Abrams, was arrested Wednesday on charges of driving while license suspended/invalid – no insurance, failure to maintain financial responsibility and a warrant from another agency.
• KIMBERLY FOSTER, 30, of Farmington, N.M., was arrested Wednesday on charegs of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and failure to identify – giving false information.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• ROBERT RUBEN SANCHEZ, 47, of 1023 Stadium, was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication with three prior convictions.
• CATISHA DEANN MINTER, 28, of 2521 Dow, was arrested Thursday on a warrant for permitting unlicensed minor to drive (parent or guardian).
• FREDA MAE OBRIEN, 56, of 3805 Connally, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
Last year, the community stood behind the firefighters and now they are returning the favor.
Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., rural firefighters will be at Walmart for Howard County VFD Community Appreciation Day.
“Last year, the community got behind us and offered food, monetary donations and encouragement,” Volunteer Fire Chief Tommy Sullivan said.
DALLAS (AP) — A jury has found a former Roman Catholic priest guilty of plotting the death of a man who accused him of sexual abuse.
According to the Dallas Morning News, the Dallas County jury of three men and nine women returned its verdict on John M. Fiala Thursday afternoon after a few hours’ deliberation. Then, testimony began in the penalty phase. Fiala could be sentenced to up to life in prison for solicitation of capital murder.
Temperatures are rising and the Salvation Army is asking for the community’s help.
Each year, the Salvation Army holds a fan drive in the summer and a heater drive in the winter with hopes of helping area residents keep cool and stay warm. The time has come to transition and gather fans for the upcoming summer months.
“We have been doing this for at least 10 years and we continue to do it because there is always a need,” Social Services Director Bessie Flores said.

Investigators with the Big Spring Police Department are still sifting through witness statements to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of 22-year-old Noe Sanchez, who was struck by a vehicle following gunfire Sunday in front of the Big Spring Mall.
According to Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer with the BSPD, the altercation involved a feud between two Big Spring families.
