Imagine your boss coming up to you and saying he was cutting your salary, only he wouldnât say how much your salary was getting cut or even when the cuts would take effect.
Now, try figuring out your household budget.
Thatâs kind of the situation facing Howard College administrators as they start preparing their budget for the next fiscal year â they know theyâre going to lose state appropriation money, but not how much or exactly when a final decision on those cuts will be handed down by state officials.
Rocky Harris, longtime head band director at Big Spring High School, has accepted the position as head band director at Permian High School, the Odessa American reported.
Shawn Bell, fine arts director for the Ector Independent School District, confirmed Friday that Harris had been offered the job, and had accepted it. He will replace Mike Watts, who served as Permian band director for the past 25 years before retiring at the end of the school year. A retirement party was held for Watts earlier this week, though the announcement of his retiring had been known for some time.
Howard County commissioners will have a number of issues to consider when they meet Monday morning, including moving a communications tower and addressing staffing issues at the local Department of Public Safety office.
According to County Judge Mark Barr, the court is expected to consider selecting another location for one of the countyâs communication towers.
âThe tower is currently located on another tower, I believe on South Mountain,â Barr said. âMy understanding is that tower has been condemned, so weâve been looking at other locations for it.â
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
âą DANNYE JOLENE STANSBERRY, 37, of 358 PR 6907, was arrested Friday on a warrant from other agency and possession of marijuana less than or equal to two ounces.
âą SONYA GAY BIDDLE, 42, of 908 W. Fourth St., was arrested Friday on charges of public intoxication, possession of controlled substance less than 28 grams (two counts) and possession of dangerous drug.
Opal Pauline Ballard, 81, of Odessa died Thursday, June 21, 2012, at her residence. She was born May 22, 1931, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Oscar Elroy and Iva (King) Chandler. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Emmit Ballard.
She is survived by her son, Royce Ballard of Odessa; daughter, Clovis (Sas-c) Pranschke of Big Spring; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 24, 2012, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
William âBillâ Warner, loving son, brother, husband, father and grandfather, died Thursday, June 21, 2012, at his residence in Big Spring. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at the Evergreen Cemetery Chapel in Stanton, with Pastor Richard Gonzalez officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, June 25, 2012, at the funeral home.
He was born Jan. 13, 1942, in El Reno, Okla., and married Linda Gail Bolay May 22, 1966, in Perry, Okla.
Rebecca Valencia, 95, of Big Spring, died Friday, June 22, 2012, at Texas Medical Center in Houston. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Sandra Ann Barnes, 51, of El Cajon, Calif., formerly of Big Spring died Thursday, June 21, 2012, in Big Spring. Private family services will be at a later date.
She was born July 14, 1960, to Patricia and Michael Walker in San Diego, Calif. She lived most of her life in El Cajon. She was a homemaker and a waitress.
Annette Louise Couch, age 58, of College Station went to be with her Lord on Thursday, June 21, 2012. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 23, 2012, at the Christ United Methodist Church, 4201 State Highway 6 South, College Station, TX 77845 at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Jerry House officiating.

A Howard County grand jury handed down more than a dozen indictments in 118th District Court Thursday afternoon, including true bills for first-degree felony charges of attempted robbery and sexual assault of a child.
Among those indicted Thursday was 51-year-old Randy Joe Hurrington, currently being held at the Howard County Detention Center, who was true billed on a charge of attempted robbery, a first-degree felony (enhanced).
