Because of computer problems, there was no activity report from the Big Spring Police Department.

The Howard County Sheriff's Office reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 p.m. today (Note: The Howard County Jail reported 72 prisoners):
• JOREGE LUIS GOMEZ JR., 21, was jailed on charges of public intoxicaton and resisting arrest, search or transportation.
• ANGIE KATHERINE MOORE, 41, was jailed on a charge of public intoxication.
• ALLEN DAVID GILBERT, 37, was jailed on a charge by check of property over $0 but less than $500.

Bike ride rolls into Big Spring

The tires were spinning despite the heat as 275 riders came into Big Spring as part of the Cactus and Crude Bike Ride for MS on Saturday. Riders reached their halfway point as they stopped in at the SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf campus.
This marks the 24th year of the event making its way through Big Spring and according to Tony Ralf, regional vice president, development, Lone Star/New Mexico of National Multiple Sclerosis Society, it looks to be another record year.

United Way Kick-off approaching

Slip on the boots and put on the bling for a second go-round.
The United Way of Big Spring and Howard County will be hosting its 68th annual campaign kick-off — Boots and Bling — at the Big Spring Country Club at 7 p.m. Aug. 18.
“It’s hard to believe it’s that time again, but here we are,†Executive Director Sandy Stewart said. “Last year we had a lot of success with the event and we decided ‘why mess with a good thing?’ We are doing it again and offering the community another chance to enjoy all that we had to offer last year as we kick off the 2013 campaign.â€

It’s certainly the last thought any student in the Crossroads area wants to consider right now, but there’s little doubt it’s just over the horizon — the return to school.
And while the trek back to classes may elicit groans about teachers and books from students, it will leave many parents in a fiscal pinch as they try to pay for their children’s school supplies, a task the Big Spring Salvation Army is hoping to step in and assist with.

The Big Spring Police reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• ANGIE KATHERINE MOORE, 41, of 1530 Forest Lane S Ste. G, was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JORGE LUIS GOMEZ, 21, of 508 State, was arrested Friday on charges of public intoxication and resist arrest search or transport.

Ulysses Mathews Jr., 55, of Big Spring died Monday, July 16, 2012, at Midland Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Wendell Smith, officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

Hang gliding championships begin this weekend

The McMahon-Wrinkle Airpark will quickly turn into a beehive of activity this weekend, as the U.S. Hang Gliding and Paragliding Competition looks to take to the skies Sunday through Saturday, July 28.

The Big Spring Airport and local airpark have been the backdrop for a number of world and national championship hang gliding competitions hosted by the U.S. Hang Gliding Championships, drawing hundreds of competitors from all over the world.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. today:
• GILBERT RECIO, 38, of 1007 Wood, was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.
• MICHAEL SCOTT WATTS, 27, of 303 Vikki Rd., was arrested Thursday on a charge of failure to display court order (occupational license).
• NANCY ANN ARENIVAZ, 45, of 910 S. Nolan, was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.

Virgie M. Mazy, 91, completed her journey on this world Monday, July 16, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, located at 5701 Hwy. 277 South with Wes Terry officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. A visitation will be held Friday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marlene Riffe, 58, of Forsan died Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Coahoma Cemetery.

She was born Oct. 19, 1953, in Big Spring, Texas, to Melva and Joe Swinney. She was a lifetime resident of Howard County. She was a bus driver for Forsan Independent School District. She loved her grandchildren, reading and sewing.
