The Big Spring Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services reported the following activity:
â˘ MEDICAL was reported in the 700 block of W. Interstate Highway 20. One person was transported to SMMC.
â˘ MEDICAL was reported in the 600 block of Culp in Coahoma. One person was transported to SMMC.
â˘ MEDICAL was reported in the 2000 block of Nolan. Service refused.
â˘ MEDICAL was reported in the 1400 block of N. Highway 87. One person was transported to SMMC.
â˘ MEDICAL was reported in the 1100 block of Lancaster. One person was transported to SMMC.
Katherine "Kate" Kincade, 56, of Big Spring died Friday, July 20, 2012, at her residence. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at the funeral home.
She was born Dec. 20, 1955, in Lamoni, Iowa, and married Luis Kincade on March 17, 1990, in Socorro, N.M.
Kate moved to Socorro, N.M., in 1986 from Lamoni, Iowa, and then to Big Spring in 1996.
Survivors include her husband, Luis Kincade of Big Spring; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Kincade of Odessa; one brother; and one sister.
In a surprise move pushed forward by Mayor Tommy Duncan, the Big Spring City Council is set to consider a radical reorganization and repurposing of the Big Spring Economic Development Corporation that could see the dismissal of the agency's board of directors.
A wildfire swept through northeast Big Spring Sunday afternoon, and while the blaze managed to scorch between 300 and 400 acres of scrubland and came dangerously close to a number of homes, no structures were lost, according to local firefighting officials.
Firefighters with the Howard County Volunteer Fire Department, assisted by the Big Spring Fire Department, Howard County and the City of Big Spring responded to the fire shortly after noon Sunday at an area northeast of the intersection of FM 700 and Interstate Highway 20.
Because of computer problems, there was no activity report from the Big Spring Police Department.
The Howard County Sheriff's Office reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 p.m. today (Note: The Howard County Jail reported 72 prisoners):
â˘ JOREGE LUIS GOMEZ JR., 21, was jailed on charges of public intoxicaton and resisting arrest, search or transportation.
â˘ ANGIE KATHERINE MOORE, 41, was jailed on a charge of public intoxication.
â˘ ALLEN DAVID GILBERT, 37, was jailed on a charge by check of property over $0 but less than $500.
The tires were spinning despite the heat as 275 riders came into Big Spring as part of the Cactus and Crude Bike Ride for MS on Saturday. Riders reached their halfway point as they stopped in at the SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf campus.
This marks the 24th year of the event making its way through Big Spring and according to Tony Ralf, regional vice president, development, Lone Star/New Mexico of National Multiple Sclerosis Society, it looks to be another record year.
Slip on the boots and put on the bling for a second go-round.
The United Way of Big Spring and Howard County will be hosting its 68th annual campaign kick-off â Boots and Bling â at the Big Spring Country Club at 7 p.m. Aug. 18.
âItâs hard to believe itâs that time again, but here we are,â Executive Director Sandy Stewart said. âLast year we had a lot of success with the event and we decided âwhy mess with a good thing?â We are doing it again and offering the community another chance to enjoy all that we had to offer last year as we kick off the 2013 campaign.â
Itâs certainly the last thought any student in the Crossroads area wants to consider right now, but thereâs little doubt itâs just over the horizon â the return to school.
And while the trek back to classes may elicit groans about teachers and books from students, it will leave many parents in a fiscal pinch as they try to pay for their childrenâs school supplies, a task the Big Spring Salvation Army is hoping to step in and assist with.

â˘ ANGIE KATHERINE MOORE, 41, of 1530 Forest Lane S Ste. G, was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
â˘ JORGE LUIS GOMEZ, 21, of 508 State, was arrested Friday on charges of public intoxication and resist arrest search or transport.
Ulysses Mathews Jr., 55, of Big Spring died Monday, July 16, 2012, at Midland Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Wendell Smith, officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
