Let the campaign begin … well, almost.
United Way of Big Spring and Howard County hosted its annual campaign kickoff, Boots and Bling, Saturday night. During the event, the organization's new campaign goal — $300,000 — was announced through the words of Dr. Seuss.
“So let's get on our way of kicking of our campaign of $300,000,” Ann McClarty, United Way first vice president, said. “Will we succeed? Yes, we will succeed, 100 percent guaranteed.”
Money raised in the 2013 campaign will help support 16 local agencies:
The local Salvation Army is currently taking applications for its annual back-to-school supply drive, as the charity hopes to send are children back to class with all the materials necessary for a successful school year.
According to Bessie Flores, social worker for the charity group, the Salvation Army will accept applications for assistance through the program through Friday, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Salvation Army office located at 811 W. Fifth St.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• JAMIE JONES CHAPPELL, 35, of 1200 Madison, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• SHAWN WILLIAM TOW, 27, of Oklahoma, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• FREDERICK HERNANDEZ, 42, of 1405 S. Runnels, was arrested Sunday on warrants for driving while license invalid (two counts).
• CLIFTON LEWIS SCOTT, 35, of 538 Westover Rd. Apt. 206, was arrested Sunday on charges of assault – family violence and interfering with an emergency phone call.
Julie Hallford Mince, 39, of Big Spring died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Her services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Rodney S. Garza, 56, of Big Spring died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012, at his residence. His services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
