As area students prepare to go back to school for the fall semester, local emergency officials are urging parents and guardians to take time to ready children for their daily trek to class.
Big Spring Fire Department Chief Craig Ferguson said many children will be making the trip to school each day on foot and called for parents and motorists to do their part to watch out for local youth.
FORSAN â€” A new year of school is fast approaching and a nine-year tradition continues Friday in the Forsan Jr./Sr. High School cafeteria.
Forsan Superintendent Randy Johnson is extending an invitation to all residents of Howard County to attend the Forsan Superintendent's Prayer Breakfast, a tradition started when Johnson took over the head position.
â€śSchool has a lot of opportunity for crisis problems and conflict and I truly believe in the power of prayer,â€ť Johnson said. â€śI think the start of a new year is a great time to join in prayer and ask for guidance.â€ť
The Howard County Sheriff's Office reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today (the county jail reported 78 prisoners):
â€˘ MICHAEL RAY WATSON, 36, was jailed on a warrant for failure to maintain financial responsibility.
â€˘ ROBERT RUBIN SANCHEZ, 48, was jailed on a charge of public intoxication.
â€˘ ROBERTO VALDEZ SALAZAR, 38, was jailed on a charge of driving while license invalid.
â€˘ CHRISTOPHER DESHON MINTER, 40, was jailed on a charge of driving while license invalid.
Eldon Cook left this world to be with his heavenly father Monday, Aug. 20, 2012. Eldon was born Aug. 11, 1923, in Stamford, Texas, in the home of his parents, James Ollie and Willy Katherine (Hornsby) Cook.
Julie Ann Hallford Mince, 39, of Big Spring, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:30 p.m until 8 p.m at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial at Trinity Memorial Park.
She was born on Sept. 30, 1972, in Big Spring, Texas. and was a lifelong resident of Big Spring, attending Marcy Elementary, Goliad Middle school, Runnels Junior High and Big Spring High. She was a loving daughter, sister, mother and grandmother.
Rodney 'Ronnie' Garza, 56, of Big Spring died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012, at his residence. Vigil services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
Rodney was born Feb. 16, 1956, in Trenton, N.J. He was a beloved son, brother and uncle. Rodney lived in many places in the world, due to his fatherâ€™s military career.
One of Rodneyâ€™s greatest passions was cooking, which culminated in his participation in several grand opening ceremonies for Marriott Hotels.
