Howard County commissioners will consider rescinding the current burn ban when they meet Monday morning, a move county officials say has been made possible by recent rainfall in and around the Crossroads area.
The commissioners court gave the go-ahead for the current burn ban during its July 30 meeting at the request of Howard County Volunteer Fire Chief Tommy Sullivan. Each ban stays in effect for 90 days unless rescinded by the court.
Howard College officials are more than ready to get this budget business behind them for another year.
After a summer dealing with uncertainty and shortfalls, trustees are expected to approve the college's budget and tax rate for the coming fiscal year when they hold their monthly meeting at 12:30 p.m. Monday in the student union building's Tumbleweed Room.
Trustees will likely OK a tax rate of roughly 18 cents per $100 valuation, which is 6 cents below the previous year's rate but will still bring in more local tax revenue in 2012-2013.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• DANIEL O. ARELLANO, 34, of 4101 Muir, was arrested Friday on warrants from other agency (two counts).
• LINDA CORTEZ WHITE, 42, of Coahoma, was arrested Friday on warrants from other agency (two counts).
• TERESA MARIE CHAVERA, 28,of 1102 Lamar, was arrested Friday on a warrant from other agency.
• JERRY RAY MANN II, 32, of 400 Culp Avenue in Coahoma, was arrested on charges of resisting arrest, search or transport and assault family violence, threat or offensive touch.
Murphy Allen Woodson, 76, was born Dec. 21, 1935, in Coahoma, Texas, and died July 14, 2012, in San Antonio, Texas.
He had chosen to be cremated.
He graduated from Coahoma High School, attended Howard College for one year and attended Tennessee Temple College, graduating in 1957.
Following summer classes from Baylor University he taught school for three years. In 1963, he joined the Air Force serving 21 years as a flying AWACS radar officer, retiring as a major in 1984.
William Dupree of Big Spring, Texas, was born Jan. 4, 1975, and died peacefully in his home Aug. 21, 2012. William has been taken to the Kingdom of Heaven, but will never be forgotten by those who knew and loved him.
William graduated from Big Spring High School and Sul Ross University. Over his short life he brought joy to those around him.
He is survived by many friends, his parents, William Dale and Pat Dupree; brother, Kinney Dupree; and niece and nephew, Alexandria and Drake.
Jonnie Spruill, 87, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at Kristi Lee Manor Nursing Home, in Colorado City. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, in the Chapel at Mount Olive Memorial Park with Chaplain Walter McCall of Compass Hospice.
