City budget workshops begin Monday

City administration and members of the Big Spring City Council will roll up their sleeves and delve into fiscal planning for the coming year during a special work session Monday evening, as the municipality looks to begin the process of nailing down its 2012-2013 budget.
Preparing the budget will mean much more than just crunching numbers, however, as the city will be facing a number of serious challenges in the coming years, a fact City Manager Gary Fuqua pointed out May 29, when the council and administration met during a preliminary budget work session.

Despite a year of disruptions, distractions and noise, Big Spring High School officials are keeping their eyes on the finish line.
With construction wrapping up on four new elementary campuses, the last remaining part of Big Spring Independent School District’s $60 million bond project is renovation at the high school. As part of the bond package, the school will receive a new roof, updated science labs and a remodeled fine arts wing.

Facing road woes, county to tackle budget

Howard County commissioners are set to hold a special meeting Monday morning to discuss — and possibly take action on — the proposed 2012-2013 tax rate, the foundation for the court’s fiscal plan for the coming year.
According to County Auditor Jackie Olson, the effective tax rate — the rate which would bring in the same levy as last year — is 30.9221 cents per $100 valuation. The rollback rate, which is comprised of the effective rate plus an 8 percent increase in the levy, has been calculated at 33.1460 cents per $100 valuation.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• JOSE ANTONIO NIETO, 31, of 2403 S. Main St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
• CODY DEAN JAMES, 23, of Lamesa, was arrested Friday on charges of public intoxication and urinating in a public place.
• MARGIE GREEN, 29, of 711 S. Johnson St., was arrested Friday on a charge of public intoxication.
• ISRAEL MIRAMONTES, 28, of 411 N. Scurry St., was arrested Saturday, on a charge of evading arrest/detention previously convicted SJF.

Otilia Alvarado, 84, of Big Spring, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at Baylor Medical Center of Grapevine. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Urena “Judy” Loya

August 4, 2012

Urena “Judy” Loya, 80, of Big Spring died Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
A prayer vigil will be held at 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
Urena was born June 6, 1932, in Sonora, Texas, and married Octavio A. Loya. He preceded her in death July 23, 2004.

Brookins birth

August 4, 2012

Rylee Brooklynn Marie Brookins, daughter of Lauren Dorn of Snyder and Joseph Brookins of Mauston, Wisc., was born July 21, 2012, at 5:47 p.m.
She weighed 6 pounds 11 ounces and measured 19 ½ inches.
Maternal grandparents are Gina and Cody Wells of Big Spring and Christopher and Palma Dorn of Pampa.
Paternal grandparents are Kelly and Duane Brookins of Azle, Texas.

45th anniversary

August 4, 2012

Hebrew Jones Jr. and Vivian (Bledsoe) Jones quietly observed their 45th wedding anniversary July 28, 2012, at Moss Creek Ranch.
The celebration was attended by all of Hebrew and Vivian’s children, grandchildren, as well as several other members of their families and friends.
Their grandsons are Da’Mareon and Sareem; granddaughters are Megan Jones of Arlington, Brittany Thompson of Arlington, Lamesaha McDowell of Elizabeth Town, N.C. Justice and Jazmine Jones of Big Spring.

Fletcher wedding

Ms. Larissa Gail Adkins and Mr. John Francis Fletcher were united in marriage June 22, 2012, at 5 p.m. in Wailea, Hawaii on the island of Maui. The ceremony was on a hill above the Pacific Ocean located outside of Gannon’s Restaurant. Leslie Adkins, brother of the bride, officiated at the ceremony. There were twenty-two guests in attendance and numerous close friends and family were able to watch the ceremony via the restaurant’s live feed through their web-camera.
