For those wanting to know where the medical community stands this year, the State of the Community Series Part 3: Medical Update — set for Aug. 21 — will provide that information.
Reports will be delivered by Ed Moughon, CEO of Big Spring State Hospital; Dr. Judith Madura, CEO of South Plains Rural Health Services; Larry Rodgers, CEO of Scenic Mountain Medical Center; and Dan Marsh, CEO of West Texas VA Health Care Systems.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
• SETH SAVAGE SLAYTON, 19, of 506 N. Second St., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of aggravated robbery.
• BERNARDO FRAUSTO PEREZ JR., 48, of 2910 Cherokee St., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JENNIFER CANALES, 25, of 2605 W. Dow, was arrested Wednesday on charges of manufacture delivery of controlled substance between four grams and 200 grams, failed to maintain financial responsibility and no drivers license when unlicensed.
Annette Howard, 75, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Walter McCall officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at the funeral home.
Annette was born Jan. 19, 1937, in Tarzan, Texas. She retired from Pollard Chevrolet-Buick-Cadillac as office manager after 50 years of service.
She was a member of Baptist Temple.

It was equal parts grand opening and victory lap.
Big Spring Independent School District officials held ribbon cutting ceremonies Tuesday at the four new elementary campuses, a series of events which turned into a rolling celebration of a years-long process to make the new schools a reality.
Large crowds greeted officials at each school, and by the time the caravan reached its final stop, Marcy Elementary, the mood had turned quite celebratory.
Big Spring Independent School District trustees will get an update on ongoing construction projects around the district when they hold their monthly meeting at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.
The construction, funded by a $60 million bond approved by voters in May 2010, will result in four new elementary schools and significant renovations at the high school and junior high.
To use a racing analogy, the projects aren't exactly at the finish line yet, but they've definitely reached the home stretch.

Lacy Edwards, 69, of Big Spring, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, at his residence. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Rick Cunningham and Patrick Robinson officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Trinity Memorial Park.

Big Spring city officials are adopting a “just say no” approach to tax increases this coming year.
The city council gave its tentative approval to a new budget that is both balanced and features a slight dip in the tax rate during its annual workshop Monday night.
Among other things, the new budget features a pay raise for employees (the first in two years), $500,000 for water line replacement, set-aside money to purchase property for landfill use and almost $4 million designated for water purchases.
Howard County commissioners approved a slight increase in the tax levy during their budget workshop Monday morning.
Commissioner gave a tentative OK to a new tax rate of 33 cents per $100 valuation, a sharp decrease from 43.7 cents the previous year. Because of of higher property valuations, however, the new rate will bring in more tax money.
The higher levy will not automatically translate into increased tax bills, County Judge Mark Barr quickly noted.
“Some people will see a tax decrease,” he said. “Mineral values account for more than half of the tax (levy) increase.”

• NICOLE ASHLEE WADE, 26, of Odessa, was arrested Monday on a charge of graffiti-pecuniary loss less than $500.
• RACHEL RAMIREZ RODRIGUEZ, 33, of 1002 N. Main St. 1, was arrested Monday on a warrant for no drivers license when unlicensed, bail jumping/failure to appear/fine only (two counts), failed to maintain financial responsibility.
• THEFT was reported:
In the 600 block of N.E. Second Street.
In the 1700 block of S. Monticello.
In the 800 block of W. Sixth.
