Steers trounce Mustangs 51-14 in front of homecoming crowd

The Steers kept the win streak alive for an enthusiastic homecoming crowd as Big Spring — led by sophomore quarterback Tobyn Tannehill — walked all over rival Andrews, defeating the Mustangs 51-14 andimproving to 4-0 on the season.

For the second straight week, the Steers' opponents drew first blood. Andrews quarterback Shane Dolgener threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead on the first possession of the game when the point after was missed.

Buffs beat Indians, Coahoma loses in Denver City, Bearkats fall to Ira

TUSCOLA — This time, the Buffaloes hunted the Indians.

The undefeated Forsan Buffaloes traveled to meet the winless Jim Ned High School on Friday, but barely scraped by with a victory as the Buffs were forced to mount a 25-point comeback to defeat the Indians, who had jumped out to 21-0 lead by the end of the first half of play.

Forsan's Brendan Roman scored two running touchdowns and rushed for 117 yards and Trevor Burchett had a 37-yard scoring reception. Burchett also shared quarterbacking duties with Marcus Cervantes. Both passed for one touchdown apiece.

Whitt gets 10 years in prison time

A 54-year-old Big Spring man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Friday morning in 118th District Court, pleading guilty to one count of prohibited sexual conduct after law enforcement discovered he had fathered a child with his daughter.
Edgar Dale Whitt, 54, formerly of 4302.5 S. Highway 87 and currently in the custody of the Howard County Detention Center, had been indicted by a grand jury June 1 on two counts of prohibited sexual conduct and four counts of indecency with a child, all second-degree felonies.

County to finalize tax rate Monday

Howard County commissioners will look to put the finishing touches on their 2012-2013 fiscal plan Monday, as the court looks to adopt its tax rate for the coming year.
The court — which approved its 2012-2013 budget during the Sept. 10 meeting — will consider adopting a tax rate of 33 cents per $100 valuation during the meeting.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• ERNESTO ALONZO, 39, of 1900 Martin Luther King Blvd., was arrested Friday on a warrant for driving without being secured by safety belt.
• BRESHA DENAE RANDLE, 19, of 1805 Mittel Ave., was arrested Friday on warrants for fail to appear (x2), expired registration and failed to control speed.
• THEFT was reported:
In the 1600 block of E. Sixth.
In the 3500 block of E. I-20.
In the 1100 block of Hwy 176.
In the 300 block of S. Rex in Forsan.

Annette “Ann” Marie Weaver, 81, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, at Midland Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. at Weaver Family & Friends Cemetery with Wade Cobb, minister of the Gathering in Midland, officiating.
