A barbecue turned violent in Martin County during the weekend, as a Midland man was arrested on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two people were treated for injuries, according to law enforcement officials.
Corey Glenn Rodgers, 43, of Midland, was arrested on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after officials with the Martin County Sheriff's Office say he attacked a number of people at a party Sunday evening in the 3000 block of State Highway 176.
Howard County commissioners closed the books on their fiscal plan for the coming year Monday morning, as the court adopted its 2012-2013 tax rate on a unanimous vote.
The court adopted a tax rate of 33 cents per $100 valuation, down considerably from last year's 43.6720 cents per $100 valuation.
County Auditor Jackie Olson said the 2012-2013 rate — which is slightly more than the effective tax rate of 30.9221 cents — will generate $753,000 more tax dollars for the county than last year's levy.
Lillymay Hildreth Dawkins, 89, of Midland, Texas, passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at her home of 62 years.
Merrita Chambers, 59, of Big Spring, died Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, at the Baptist Hospice House in San Angelo. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel in Midland with the Rev. Bob Porterfield officiating.
She was born Dec. 28, 1952, in Ouachita Parish, La., and married Charles Leon Chambers in 1975 in Austin, Texas. He preceded her in death Nov. 5, 1987.
Merrita moved with her family to West Texas during the 1960s. She enjoyed making jewelry.
Billie Jean Johnson, 79, of Austin, formerly of St. Lawrence, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2012 in an Austin nursing home. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
