Bus drivers sought; apply now

September 15, 2012

Big Spring Independent School District has a job for you — but only if you like kids, enjoy driving large vehicles and don’t mind part-time pay.
Like other school districts in the West Texas area, BSISD is struggling with a shortage of bus drivers this year. The district, which normally employs 21 drivers, has had to make do with only 16.
Because of the driver shortage, the district has had to consolidate its bus routes, said Wayland Pierce, BSISD transportation director.

College enrollment takes a slight dip

September 14, 2012

Bacterial meningitis vaccine requirements, low unemployment rates and a booming energy economy are just a few factors feeding into an enrollment decline of 299 students for the fall 2012 semester across the Howard College district, officials said.

The overall uncertified head count for this semester is 4,553 students, compared to 4,852 for the fall 2011 semester.

Work crews to correct 'overlooked' campus details

September 14, 2012

As mistakes go, this was a minor and inexpensive one.

In their rush to finish Big Spring Independent School District's four new elementary campuses before the start of this school year, work crews neglected to install wheelchair-accessible crosswalks in front of the new schools and now must go back and correct that oversight.

During their monthly meeting Thursday, BSISD trustees learned of the district's plan for installing the overlooked crosswalks.

Wayland Pierce, who has served as the district's liaison with construction crews during the project, made no excuses for the mixup.
