Officials with the annual AARP Tax-Aide program say tax preparations and filings have gone smoothly so far, and with the April tax deadline looming on the horizon, expect things to only get busier in the weeks to come.
According to program coordinator Ray Alexander, he and his team of volunteers have been serving between 30 and 40 tax filers each.
Bruce C. Broughton, 57, of La Porte, Texas, passed away Feb. 23, 2012, in Ingram, Texas, after a sudden illness. Mr. Broughton was born Nov. 2, 1954, to W.D. â€śSlimâ€ť and Alberta â€śPewâ€ť Broughton. He grew up in Big Spring and graduated from Big Spring High in 1972. He was employed by Circuit Breaker Sales & Repair in Deer Park, Texas, as an electrician.
Survivors include his mother, Alberta â€śPewâ€ť Broughton of Big Spring; his brother, Bryan and wife Sharon of La Vernia, Texas; his favorite nephew, Blake Dean Broughton of La Vernia; and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.
A memorial service to celebrate the 62 years of life of Ron will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2012, at Biggin Hill Air Park, Shallowater, Texas (Wings Point Ministry). He passed away Monday, Feb. 20, 2012.
Paula S. Lafler, 61, of Big Spring, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at her residence. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at the Salvation Army. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with Major Orville Chambliss and Captain Russ Keeney, officiating.
Paula was born Nov. 10, 1950, in Denver, Colo. and married Daniel James Lafler, Sr. on May 1, 1970, in Big Spring, Texas.
Derwood Zant, 96, of Greenwood, formerly of Big Spring, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at his residence. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Burial with military honors will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
Local election officials say recent rumors that millions of Texans are having their voter registration invalidated because of ongoing litigation surrounding redistricting in the Lone Star State aren't true.
According to Howard County Elections Administrator Saundra Bloom, a whirlwind of rumors â€” mostly in the form of e-mails â€” have been brought to her attention claiming voters are having their registration status invalidated.
Heart health was the focus Thursday afternoon at the Go Red event and luncheon, sponsored by Scenic Mountain Medical Center's Healthy Woman program.
Doctors Rudy and Chris Haddad were guest speakers and focused on bringing attention to the No. 1 killer of women.
According to American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading killer of women and is the cause of one in three deaths each year.
â€śSince 1984, more women than men have died from cardiovascular disease,â€ť Dr. Rudy Haddad said. â€śAfrican Americans are at a higher risk as are Latinos than Caucasian.â€ť

â€˘ BROOKELYNN PAIGE COKER, 19, of 208 Moore Rd., was arrested Thursday on warrants for failure to maintain financial responsibility, failure to appear (two counts) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
â€˘ JOSEPH RAY OLIVAS, 21, of 3911 Rice, was arrested Thursday on warrants for assault by contact, defective stop lamp and failure to appear.
Ruby Phillips, 87, of Garland, formerly of Big Spring died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, at Baylor Medical Center at Garland. The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Westbrook Cemetery with the Rev. Joey Bacon officiating.
She was born July 12, 1924, in Mitchell County, Texas. She was a homemaker and had worked at Texas Instruments in Dallas. She had lived in Garland since 1965. She was a Baptist.
