Police beat

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• FREDDIE WILLIAMS, 38, of 2539 Gunter, was arrested Saturday on a charge of driving while license invalid.
• AVEL ABREO RAMIREZ, 65, of 1512 Wood St., was arrested Saturday on a charge of public intoxication.
• CHAD EVERETT COLEMAN, 29, of 4400 N. Holiday Hill Rd. Apt. 915 in Midland, was arrested Saturday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
• DAWN MICHELLE TUBB, 34, of 511 E. 15th St., was arrested Saturday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

20 indicted by grand jury

A Big Spring man was indicted Thursday by a Howard County grand jury on numerous charges stemming from the Aug. 22 chase and attempted shooting of local man that led to the invasion of a family’s home in the 500 block of State Street.
Brian Christopher Lewis, 27, currently being held at the Howard County Detention Center, was indicted on charges of deadly conduct (two counts, both enhanced first-degree felonies), unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon (two counts, both enhanced first-degree felonies) and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (first-degree felony, enhanced).

Heritage Museum to share a vintage Valentine’s Day

Heritage Museum will be showing its romantic side on Valentine’s Day.
In recognition of Valentine’s Day and the new Vintage Valentine exhibit, which will run through March 3, the museum will host an all-day reception.
ā€œWe are showing our romantic side at the Heritage Museum with this vintage exhibit,ā€ Museum Director Nancy Raney said.
Part of the exhibit will show how wedding dresses have changed over the past hundred years. On display will be a wedding dress from 1894 and a dress from 1994.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Thursday and 7 a.m. Saturday:
• JOSEPH JUSTIN LAROCQUE, 33, of 1406 Runnels St., was arrested Thursday on warrants for theft of less than $50/shoplifting, failed to obtain Texas driver's license within 90 days and fail to appear (three counts).
• PAULA ISABEL LEOS, 30, of 1803 S. Owens St., was arrested Thursday on a charge of theft more than $50 and less than $500/shoplifting.
• MERRITA CHAMBERS, 59, of 511 NW Eighth St., was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.

ā€˜Coming Home’ author schedules local book signing

ā€œComing Homeā€ … not only what author, Kathleen Rigdon Highley is doing, but it's also the title of her new novel.

Highley — a West Texas native — was raised in Big Spring and graduated from Big Spring High School and Howard College. She will be on hand for a book signing at Inspirations Flowers and Gifts on Saturday, Feb. 11. Her book signing will take place from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Zang to highlight milestone concert Saturday

Van Cliburn gold medalist Hauchen Zhang will be the featured performer when the Big Spring Symphony Orchestra takes the stage Saturday night, but the audience is sure to enjoy other classical music in the show, too, said Dr. Keith Graumann, conductor.

ā€œI think we have put together a very enjoyable evening. This is a concert that will have a lot of emotion, both power and a delicate touch,ā€ Graumann said.

John Robert Smithwick

John Robert Smithwick, 20, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, in Houston, Texas.

Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, Feb. 6, 2012, at 2 p.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church with Father John Guzaldo officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors and rosary recited at 5 p.m.

John was born Sept. 6, 1991, to Danny and Maria Lourdes Garcia Smithwick in Houston, Texas. He was a resident of Waco and graduated from A.J. Moore Academy in 2011.

Charles Ray 'Charlie' Seals

Charles Ray ā€œCharlieā€ Seals, 68, of Coahoma died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at his residence. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial at Coahoma Cemetery.

He was born June 15, 1943, in Stamford to Oleain and Charlie Seals. He married Nona Gilbert on March 2, 1963, in San Angelo. They moved to Howard County 40 years ago from Post. He worked at Howard College, retiring after 23 years. He was a member of Grace Fellowship Church of God.

Albert 'Beto' Chavarria

Albert ā€œBetoā€ Chavarria, 58, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Michael Villareal officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

He was born Nov. 18, 1953, in Big Spring to Sara and Eulalio Chavarria. He was a lifetime resident of Big Spring and worked as a roustabout in the oil field. He married Maria Holguin on Aug. 6, 2011, in Big Spring. He was a Christian.

Hawks open baseball season with doubleheader sweep

Heading into Thursday's season opener, Britt Smith was counting on pitching to be a strength for the Howard College baseball team.

So far, so good.

Five Howard pitchers combined to surrender only one earned run as the Hawks opened their season with a 7-4, 10-0 doubleheader sweep of Frank Phillips College at Jack Barber Field Thursday afternoon.
