Tradition continues for BSHS debate team

For the ninth time in a row, the Big Spring High School Debate team brought home the University Interscholastic League District Cross-Examination Debate crown.
Bringing home the gold was the team of Seth Trevino and Caleb Gonzales.
“Winning district and going to the UIL CX State Meet is awesome, but I’m also glad that I could continue the tradition of district champions here at BSHS.” Trevino said.
Joining Trevino and Gonzales at the state meet will be the team of Forrest McJunkin and Shiloh Creswell. This will be Creswell’s second year attending the meet.

Guzman birth

Maddox Lee Guzman, son of Valerie Dominguez and Adam Guzman of Big Spring, was born Dec. 29, 2011, at 6 p.m.
He weighed 8 pounds and measured at 18 ¾ inches.
His maternal grandparents are Rose Dominguez and Ruben Dominguez.
His paternal grandparentsare Alicia Guzman and Epijoe Guzman.

Omega Hernandez, 80, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Billy Joe Burleson

Billy Joe Burleson, 55, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel with Jerome McNally, pastor of New Life Ministries Church of God in Christ, officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Hamlin East Cemetery in Hamlin, Texas.
He was born July 24, 1956, in Hamlin, Texas, to Rosie Lee and James Burleson. He worked as a heavy equipment operator in road construction. He moved to Big Spring in 1990 from Hamlin. He was a member of Christ Community Fellowship.

‘Love run’ coming to state park

Love the park? Love to run?
February 11 will provide an opportunity to combine love for the park and the love to run and even a chance to share it with your partner, in the first annual Run 2 Love 2 Run at the Big Spring State Park.
“Valentine’s Day was the inspiration for this event, of course,” Park Manager Ron Alton said. “This is an incentive for folks to stay fit.”

Van Cliburn gold medalist to perform with symphony

Hauchen Zhang, gold medalist of the Van Cliburn piano competition, will perform with the Big Spring Symphony Orchestra in Garrett Hall the evening of Saturday, Feb. 4.
The concert was originally scheduled fto be held at the Big Spring Municipal Auditorium, but delays in renovation of the facility forced a change of venue. Garrett Hall is located at First United Methodist Church, at the corner of Scurry and Fourth streets. The concert will begin at 8 p.m.
Zhang, of China, is the first gold medalist to perform with the orchestra, according to Dr. Keith Graumann, conductor.

Wizard of Oz puts on play at Big Spring Junior High

The theatre department is putting on the Wizard of Oz tonight and Saturday night. Both performances will start at 7 p.m. Admission for adults is $5 and student tickets will be available at the door. The performance will take place in the high school auditorium.

I-20 to get speed boost

The distance between communities along Interstate 20 is about to get a little bit shorter — well, faster, anyway.

The Texas Transportation Commission on Thursday approved 75 mile per hour designations for close to 1,500 miles of interstate, including I-20 through Howard County. In all, the changes impact 60 counties.

One important fact motorists need to know is the changes won't take place until the signs are posted.

Healthy Woman celebrates third year of local program

“Smartt” advice and laughter filled the Dora Roberts Community Center ballroom Thursday evening as Lisa Smartt, author and comedian, delivered her words of wisdom during “Three Thrilling Years” of Healthy Woman.

This was the second year she was featured as the guest speaker for the event.

“There was just something about Lisa that made the decision to invite her back for a command performance an easy one. She is one of us,” Scenic Mountain Medical Center Marketing Director Kim Howell said.

• GUS EARL FADE, 37, of 1317 Mulberry, was arrested Thursday on a charge of public intoxication.
• FELICIA CANALES, 22, of 616 State St., was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
• JOHN ANTHONY PANTOJA, 21, of 2202 Alabama, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
• PATRICIA SUE CLARK, 35, of Splendora, Texas, was arrested Thursday on a warrant from another agency.
