Cliff Howard, 81, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at Myers & Smith Chapel.
He was born July 13, 1930, in Childress, Texas, to Beulah Mae and Milton Clifford Howard. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was stationed in Korea. He worked for Phillips Petroleum Company for 38 years.
Kenneth C. Davidson was born Jan. 5, 1936, in Big Spring, Texas. He passed away Jan. 24, 2012, at Midland Memorial Hospital.
Ken lived most of his life in Howard County. During his service in the U.S. Navy, he completed basic training in San Diego before being stationed in Phoenix, Ariz. After spending a few years in oilfield supply work in Andrews and Denver City, Texas, as well as Eunice, N.M., Ken owned and operated a service station in Denver City.
Kevin Brent Matteson, 51, of Sand Springs passed away Jan. 22, 2012, at his residence. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at 1006 N. Moss Lake Road. A Memorial Service will be held in Big Spring at Myers & Smith Chapel, located at 301 E. 24th St., at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, with the Rev. Carroll Kohl officiating. The memorial is open to the public and the family invites all who knew Kevin and the Matteson family to attend.
Wilma Grice, 84, of Big Spring died Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, in a Greenville, Texas, nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
She was born Aug. 25, 1927, in Colorado City, Texas, and married L.D. Grice on July 28, 1945, in Big Spring, Texas. Wilma worked and retired from the I.U.O.E. Local 826 and served as a volunteer at Scenic Mountain Medical Center for many years. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Mary Joyce "Nana" Wilkerson, 95, of Stanton, Ky., formerly of Garden City, Texas, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at her home. She was born Nov. 14, 1916, in Sterling City, Texas, to Clarence Marvin and Bessie Lee Cook Sparkman. She married Joy Edward Wilkerson on Nov. 23, 1935, in Sterling City, Texas.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra "Sandy" Berryman of Stanton; an adopted daughter, Juda McKinney of Lubbock; a sister, Peggy Monroe of Kerrville; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Milton "Rip" Lewis, 86, of Big Spring died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Charlie Edmonds officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6: p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, 2012, at the funeral home.
Donald G. McCommons, 72, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
He was born Sept. 30, 1939. He had been a resident of Big Spring for more than 30 years. He was a long distance truck driver, later working in automotive body repair, painting and auto glass. He also owned Pioneer Auto Sales Company. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
Donald has no immediate survivors.
Ray Mendoza Sr., 54, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Paul B. Herr officiating.
He was born Aug. 6, 1957, in Bee County, Texas, to Marcella and Tranquilino Mendoza. He was a cook at Dennyâ€™s and also did landscape. He lived most of his life in Big Spring and was a Christian.
Dorothy M. Kilgore, 83, of El Paso, formerly of Big Spring died Wednesday at Center for Compassionate Care in El Paso. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at Trinity Memorial Park with the Rev. Herb McPherson, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating.
She was born Jan. 16, 1929, in Anderson, Ind., to Mildred and Ezra Garwood. She worked as an LVN at Webb Air Force Base Hospital for 18 years. She also worked at Malone & Hogan and Cowper Hospital. She was a member of Berea Baptist Church. She moved to El Paso several years ago.
Coaches and players like to talk about intensity as if it's something that can be bottled and stored away for use at appropriate times, but in truth it's an intangible thing that you either have or you don't.
Thursday night against Odessa College, the Howard College Hawks lacked intensity in the first half. The second half, however, was a far different story.
