In a bit of a milestone for what has become historic drought conditions for West Texas and the immediate area, Big Spring City Council approved moving from Stage 3 of its drought contingency plan to Stage 2, switching from mandatory water restrictions to voluntary conservation efforts.
According to Assistant City Manager Todd Darden, the Colorado River Municipal Water District â€” which distributes raw water to several West Texas cities, including Big Spring â€” has lifted its restrictions on supplied water.
Area educators are getting a better idea about what will be expected from students taking state standardized tests.
Big Spring Independent School District trustees will hear a report on changes in the state of Texas' accountability system when they hold their monthly meeting at 5:15 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.
The state recently switched the standardized tests it requires of Texas public school students â€” going with the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test for grades 3 through 8 and end of course exams for high school students.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
â€˘ JASON DAVID LEE, 32, of 1503 Sycamore Apt. A, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant for expired registration.
â€˘ JOSHUA ALLEN NOBLE, 26, of 3716 Hatch St., was arrested Tuesday on charges of public intoxication, resisting arrest, search or transportation, criminal mischief â€“ more than $500 and less than $1,500, criminal mischief â€“ less than $50 and burglary of a habitation â€“ assault.
Thomas (Tom) Robert Mullen, 84, of Lubbock, Texas, formerly of Big Spring, Texas, died Dec. 9, 2012, at Convent Medical Center.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Christ the King Cathedral, Lubbock, Texas, with Monsignor Ben Kasteel and the Rev. Joy A. Thachil as celebrants. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park with military honors.
Rosary will be held Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012, at 7 p.m. at Sanders Funeral Home.
PERRYTON, TEXAS â€” Wilma Jean Hardy, 81, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at Key Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Williams and the Rev. Jeff Staton officiating. Burial will follow in Ochiltree Cemetery.
She was born in Electra, Texas, on Aug. 22, 1931, living in the area since 1946. She married John Hardy in Perryton, Texas, on Sept. 19, 1948. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Key Heights Baptist Church.
Pam Winters, 77, entered into rest Dec. 9, 2012, at Granby House, Granby, Mo., following an illness. She was born Sept. 7, 1935, in Aransas Pass, Texas, to Alpha and Rosa (Schaffner) Blevins.
She was a Texas resident and worked as a licensed vocational nurse from 1964 until 1989, then moved to Missouri in 1987 and worked as a medical transcriptionist until retirement. She was a member of Monark Baptist Church and loved to crochet and sew. She also enjoyed reading and having her pets.
Pam is preceded in death by her parents, Alpha and Rosa.
David Sidney Johnson, 76, of Midland died Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Resthaven Memorial Park.
He was born Jan. 23, 1936, in Hays County, Texas, moving to Martin County in 1943. He graduated from Stanton High School in 1955 and served in the U.S. Navy. David worked for Texas Electric Company for 33 years, retiring in 1994. He was a Baptist.
Ofelia Galan, 78, of Big Spring died Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at her residence. Vigil services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with burial at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
She was born Oct. 10, 1934, in Hays County, Texas, to Isabel and Telesforo Galan. She was a homemaker and a housekeeper. She lived most of her life in Big Spring and was a Catholic.
Sue Balios, 76, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at her residence. The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with burial at Trinity Memorial Park.
Sue was born June 19, 1936, in Abilene, Texas, to Audre and Delmer McLeod. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Acuff, Texas, and married James Balios on June 29, 1954, in Lubbock. They moved to Big Spring in 1963 from Lubbock. James preceded her in death Nov. 12, 2002.
Fannie Hagins, 83, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, in Stanton. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial at Gail Cemetery.
