Road closure tops commissioners' agenda

A resolution to permanently close a portion of a county road in the Tubbs Addition will highlight a routine meeting of Howard County Commissioners Court at 10 a.m. Monday.

The road dead-ends in front of two homes and both owners have petitioned the county to close the road to through traffic.

“it's pretty simple, really,” county Judge Mark barr said. “Both property owners are in agreement over this. All it takes is a resolution.”

Also Monday, commissioners will hear a report from Sheriff Stan Parker on the ethnic profile of county jail prisoners during 2012.

Forsan ISD trustees to consider grading rule suspension

FORSAN —School trustees here are expected to join the majority of Texas school districts in suspending a controversial grading rule when they hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the administration wing board room.

The board will consider a resolution suspending the “15 percent rule.” Under the rule, a student's score on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) end of course exams would account for 15 percent of the student's final grade in each tested subject area.

Carolyn June Inga, 65, of San Diego, Calif., died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013. Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

She was born Sept. 25, 1947 in La Jolla, Calif. to David and Aunita (Hudgins) Rawls and married Frank Inga Sr. Sept. 30, 1966 in San Diego.
Carolyn moved to Big Spring as a child and moved back to California a few years later. In the 1980s she moved back to Big Spring and was a private caretaker. She continued taking care of families when she moved to San Diego a final time. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Forsan boys beat Plains, BSHS squads fall to Wylie on road

FORSAN — The Buffaloes evened their district record to 1-1 (11-8 overall) with a 57-46 win over visiting Plains on Friday.

Dillon Bagnall led FHS with 14 points, while Kade Fannin had 10, Aric Hernandez nine and Tyler Evans eight.

“The guys came back from an early deficit by staying focused,” Forsan Head Coach Gary Huckabee said. “We had some really good support from the bench. It was a very important win for us, it got us back on track in district play.”

The Buffs will travel to Seagraves on Tuesday.

Linda Francis

Linda Francis, 66, of Andrews passed away late Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at a Dallas area hospital.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at Andrews Church of Christ. Burial was in Andrews Old Cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home.

Linda was born Aug. 26, 1946, in Vernon, Texas, to Homer Doyle and Sue Lunsford Fowler. She attended Abilene Christian College. She married Peter C. Francis Aug. 21, 1976, in Dallas. They moved to Andrews in 1976 from Big Spring, Texas.

Kathleen Lewis, 91, of Midland, formerly of Stanton, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at First Baptist Church in Stanton with the Rev. David Harp and Phil Stroud officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton.

Emma “Jean” Walke, 82, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Graveside funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at Evergreen Cemetery in Stanton, Texas with Pastor Jannie Linney officiating.

The family will receive friends Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Gilbreath Funeral Home in Stanton, Texas.

Rubie Tom Gibbs

Rubie Tom Gibbs, 91, of Fort Collins, Colo., formerly of Big Spring, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013 in Fort Collins. Her memorial service will be Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at 7 p.m. at Myers and Smith Chapel.

Rubie was born Feb. 28, 1921 to Dr. D.T. and Lillie Jordan in Bowie, Texas. She married Forrest Gibbs Jan. 16, 1937, in Morton Texas and later moved to Big Spring. She worked at the soda fountain at Woolworth's in downtown Big Spring, as a dietician at Cowper Hospital for many years and was a member of College Baptist Church and also a member of the Rebecca Lodge.

Marion “Granny” Bozarth, 100, of Big Spring, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at Lamun-Lusk Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home in Big Spring. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Trinity Memorial Park.

She was born Oct. 29, 1912, in Fort Worth, Texas to Lela and James Williams. She was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. She lived in Portales, N.M. from 1932 until 1990, before coming to Big Spring. She owned Marion’s Beauty Salon. She was a Baptist.
