Two killed in U.S. 87 wreck

January 14, 2013

Department of Public Safety Troopers and Glasscock County Sheriff’s Office personnel were working a two-vehicle accident on South U.S. Highway 87 this morning that apparently took the lives of two people.
The accident took place near the Glasscock County line between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.
Details were unavailable at press time. Check Tuesday’s paper for more details.

Lanell Morris, 77, of Big Spring died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at Parkview Nursing and Rehab. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Johnny Bob Turner

January 14, 2013

Johnny Bob Turner, 79, of Knox City, passed away in Abilene on Jan. 9, 2013, at a local medical center. A memorial service will be held at the Piersall Benton Funeral Chapel, located at 733 Butternut St., at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013.
Johnny Bob was born in Abilene but was reared in Coahoma, Texas, where he attended school, married and raised a family. Johnny worked in the oil field most of his life and spent his retirement years in Coleman and Benjamin, Texas.

Mary Beth Brewer

Mary Beth Brewer, 84, of Midland, formerly of Big Spring, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, in a local nursing home.
She was born Nov. 5, 1928, in Coahoma, Texas, to Horace Bryan Adams and Georgia Evelyn Eggleston. She graduated from Coahoma High School and moved to Midland from Big Spring.
Mary Beth is survived by her children, Wanda Fay Brewer, Larry Paul Brewer and Elizabeth Arencibia, all of Midland, and Georgia Ann Dickenson of San Antonio; and her grandchildren, Parrish Clark and Robert Carpenter, both of San Antonio and Gillian Dickenson of Huntsville, Texas.

Maurine 'Granmommy' Hanks

Maurine "Granmommy" Hanks, 100, of Big Spring died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Derrick Looney officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at the funeral home.
She was born July 8, 1912, in Runnels County, Texas, and married Porter Hanks on Feb. 1, 1929, in Borden County, Texas. He preceded her in death May 26, 1964.

County Junior Livestock Show wraps up

They spread the wealth around when handing out awards at this past weekend's Howard County Junior Livestock Show.
Unlike past years, when one was more likely than not to see multiple grand champion or reserve champion winners, 10 different youngsters took the 10 top spots at the 2013 show, which concluded its run Saturday.
In the steer show, Braxton Iden took home grand champion honors, while Laurel Nix's entry was named reserve grand champion.
Luke Grantham had the grand champion lamb entry, while Reagan Hamlin's lamb took reserve grand champion honors.

Herlong to speak at Healthy Woman event

It doesn’t matter if you are wearing heels, going barefoot or flip-flopping it, according to Jane Jenkins Herlong, anything can be accomplished as long as you choose to go for it and that’s just what she did.
Herlong – motivational speaker and former Miss America Pageant contestant — will be delivering her speech “Bare Feet to High Heels and the Flip-Flops In-Between” at the Celebrating Four Fabulous Years Healthy Woman anniversary event Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. in the historic Hotel Settles.

Chili cook-off to benefit Children in Need Fund

The Annual Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3188 will host the 11th Annual Chili Cook-off Jan. 26, benefitting the West Texas Center’s Children in Need Fund.
The fund helps with the purchase of school supplies, clothing and tuition for summer camps and other financial needs of children who are receiving services from West Texas Centers. More than 2,500 people with a mental illness receive services each month from West Texas Centers, said West Texas Centers CEO Shelley Smith, LMSW.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• THEODORE DIAZ JR., 40, of 2311 Brent Dr., was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• HOLSTON BANKS III, 21, of 1905 Donley, was arrested Sunday on a warrant for injury to a child with intent to cause serious bodily injury.
• REYMUNDO SALINAS JR., 43, of Alice, Texas, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
• LUCAS ANTHONY LOPEZ, 18, of 2517 Albrook, was arrested Sunday on a charge of possession of marijuana – two ounces or less.
