Filing season for municipal candidates to open soon

In approximately two weeks, political hopefuls all over the Crossroads area will have the chance to toss their hats in the ring for municipal elections slated for May 11.

In the city of Big Spring, seats held by Mayor Tommy Duncan and District 5 Councilman Craig Olson will be up for grabs, according to officials with city secretary's office. The first day to file to run in all municipal elections is Jan. 30.

Those looking to get a jump on the filing process can download applications and necessary forms from the Texas Secretary of State website, located at www.sos.state.tx.us

Saldivar: School trustees play vital role

Consider the school board member — he or she is responsible for many vital decisions concerning your child's education, spends who knows how many hours getting up to speed on a labyrinth of local, state and federal regulations and probably at least that long explaining the district's position on issues to parents and other interested observers.

By the way, they don't get paid for their trouble, either.

Seems like giving them a special month is the least we can do.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• KIMBERLY NICOLE HERNANDEZ, 29, of 3617 Hamilton, was arrested Wednesday on warrants for child less than 17 years old riding without a safety belt (two counts), leaving unattended child in a motor vehicle, driving while license invalid, unlawful dog or cat tethering, dog or cat running at large, failure to appear (four counts) and no driver's license – when unlicensed.
• JUAN ANTONIO HERNANDEZ, 41, of San Antonio, Texas, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of public intoxication.

Joseph Ervin Wooten

Joseph Ervin Wooten, 76, of San Angelo died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, in San Angelo. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Community Center in Garden City with Ron Murphy officiating.

Ervin was born in Hale Center, Texas, July 19, 1936, to J.E. and Ruth (Sanders) Wooten. Ervin was a longtime resident of Glasscock County, serving as a member of the Glasscock County school board, justice of the peace and county commissioner.

Bascum “Doodle” Trammell

Bascum “Doodle” Trammell, 82, of Mansfield, formerly of Big Spring died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at the Dicey Community Cemetery in Parker County.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at the Blessing Funeral Home, Mansfield, Texas.

She was born March 16, 1930, in Hardy, Ken., and married Louie Trammell on Dec. 21, 1946. He preceded her in death Nov. 2, 1988.

Martha Genay Bertran

Martha Genay Bertran, 81, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

Martha was born June 13, 1931, in Dallas County, Texas, to Odie and Jessie (Hubbard) Tuley and married M.L. Bertran Jr. on Sept. 29, 1949, in Dallas. He preceded her in death March 15, 2012.

Izell Johnson

Izell Johnson, 99, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at her residence. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
