Two longtime top city officials announced Tuesday they will be retiring.
Lonnie Smith told Big Spring City Council members, city employees and council audience he would be retiring as police chief March 30.
âI have had great pleasure in serving this community as an officer and administrator for the past 35 years and as the chief for the past 15 years,â a very emotional Smith told the council and audience. âWe have a great department and I'm proud to be a part of it. It has a strong foundation to continue to build on.â
The father-son farming duo of Johnny and Jeremy Louder received top honors at the annual Howard Soil and Water Conservation District's annual banquet Tuesday evening.
The Louders, who have farmed in Howard, Martin and Glasscock counties for more than 50 combined years, were named the district's Outstanding Conservation Farmers for 2012.
Johnny Louder began farming in 1973, while his son, Jeremy, is in his 13th year in the business. Both are Texas Tech graduates who grow both dryland and irrigated cotton on their farm lands.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
â˘ JESUS ELIAS MORALES, 42, of Odessa, Texas, was arrested Tuesday on charges of public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance.
â˘ LUIS ADOLFO PENA, 38, of 1105 E. 14th St., was arrested Tuesday on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
â˘ CAROL CHAVEZ, 36, of 1109 N. Aylesford Apt. 328, was arrested Tuesday on two warrants from other agencies.
â˘ JENNY MARIE LYON, 38, of 604 Caylor, was arrested Tuesday on two warrants from other agencies.
Mary Ann Abreo Ficke went to be with Jesus on Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, after a long fight battling cancer. She was 62 years old. She was born in Big Spring, Texas, to Domingo and Luz Abreo on Sept. 3, 1950. She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Hope DaSilva and Fe Acosta; and brother, Salvador Abreo.
Royce "Booger" Pruit, 75, of Garden City died Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, in a Sterling City nursing home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at the Garden City Cemetery in Garden City, Texas.
He was born Sept. 13, 1937, in Lovington, N.M., and married Beverly Cox on June 8, 1956, in Lovington, N.M.
Royce came to Garden City from Penwell and graduated from Garden City High School. He started working as a deputy sheriff for Glasscock County in 1958 and was appointed sheriff in 1962.
Mary Nell "Molly" Butler, 83, of Tyler, formerly of Big Spring died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, in a Tyler hospital. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with Chaplain Rick Foster officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at the funeral home.
She was born June 24, 1929, in Houston, Texas, and married Dr. Lee Butler on April 28, 1950, in Houston. He preceded her in death Feb. 20, 1997.
Bettye J. Griffith, 78, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Marcy House. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at East Fourth Baptist Church with burial at Trinity Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Pay your respects online at www.myersandsmith.com
SWEETWATER â The Steers have struggled since district play began, but they may have turned a corner Tuesday as Big Spring defeated the Mustangs 49-39 to pick up its first 4-3A victory.
After a hard-fought loss to Greenwood last Friday, the win came in a timely manner for BSHS Head Coach Cliff Thompson.
âWe carried over the momentum from the Greenwood game,â Thompson said. âWe executed well and we shot the ball well and played good defense.â
Ty Sealy and Tyler Graves each put up 13 points for the Steers, while Tavaris Walker had nine.
