Olson won't seek second term on city council

The District 5 seat on the Big Spring City Council will see a new face following municipal elections this May, as freshman council member Craig Olson announced today he will not be seeking a second term.

In a statement provided to the Herald this morning, Olson said personal commitments weighed heavily on his decision not to seek re-election.

Friday last day to buy chamber banquet tickets

People are running out of time if they want to purchase tickets to this year's Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce Banquet.

Debbye ValVerde, executive director of the chamber, said Friday is the final day to buy tickets for this year's event, which will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 31 in Howard College's Dorothy Garrett Coliseum. Tickets cost $25 apiece.

This year's event is titled, “Moving Forward With Every Step,” an idea that dovetails nicely with both the banquet and the chamber's overall mission, ValVerde said.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. today:
• KASSAUNDRA DYHAN MUNOZ, 22, of 1007 Sycamore, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of driving while intoxicated with a child passenger.
• LETICIA MARIA CRUZ, 33, of Midland, Texas, was arrested Wednesday on a charge of public intoxication.
• JENNIFER LOPEZ URIBE, 38, of 1101 Mesa, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for permitting an unlicensed minor to drive (parent or guardian).
• BURGLARY OF A VEHICLE was reported in the 500 block of Hillside Drive.

James Hollis Meek

January 24, 2013

James Hollis Meek, 79, of Odessa passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Midland Memorial Hospital. He was born Jan. 11, 1934, in Big Spring, Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy. and was owner of the Swim Shop.
He is preceded in death by his parents, J.M. and Helen Meek; daughter, Karla Meek; and sister, Reba Kennedy.

Bettye J. Griffith

Bettye J. Griffith, 78, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Marcy House. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at East Fourth Baptist Church with burial at Trinity Memorial Park.

She was born June 15, 1934, in Winters, Texas, to Juanita and Arthur Dean. She grew up in Forsan and married Royce Griffith on Aug. 10, 1952, in Forsan. He preceded her in death Dec. 6, 2006. She worked as a bank teller for many years at First National Bank in Big Spring. She was a lifetime resident of Howard County and was a member of East Fourth Baptist Church.

Bonnie Coker

Bonnie Coker, 78, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at her residence. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

She was born April 17, 1934, in Oklahoma City, Okla., to Gertie and George McEwen. She was a homemaker and also worked for 37 years for the Big Spring Independent School District as a bus driver. She was the first woman driver in Big Spring. She was a Baptist.

Joe Lozano Jr.

Joe Lozano Jr., 61, of Big Spring died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, in a Midland hospital. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.

He was born Aug. 11, 1951, in Austin, Texas, and moved to Big Spring in 1958. Joe had worked for the Big Spring State Hospital and at Branham's Furniture. He was a member of Iglesia Bautista Le Fe.
