Charles D. Herring Jr., 96, of Big Spring, Texas died Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at the Mount Olive Memorial Park Chapel with the Rev. Bill Ivins, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating.

James 'Fats' Johnson

James "Fats" Johnson, 68, of Big Spring, Texas died Thursday Oct. 10, 2013, at Midland Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Holston Banks and Marcos Zuniga officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Wanda Ann Chaney, 65, of Eden, Texas passed away Oct. 11, 2013. Graveside service is 2 p.m. Oct.14, 2013, in Eden Cemetery, under the direction of Eden Funeral Home.
Survivors include her father, Lawrence Allen of Big Spring, Texas; son, Charles Carmack of Eden; two daughters, Cynthia Moore of Wichita, Kan., and Cheryl Carmack of Abilene, Texas; two brothers, Sidney Allen of Robert Lee and Ronnie Allen of Miles; one sister, Sue Pfifer of Hamilton; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Esther Haggard, 94, of Stanton, Texas died Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, in at Midland Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stanton. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring.
A vigil service will be 7 p.m., Monday, Oct.14, 2013, at the funeral home.
She was born March 4, 1919, in New Orleans, La., and married Robert Haggard Aug.19, 1938, in Houston, Texas. He preceded her in death Sept. 8, 1996.

One dead; one charged with murder

October 14, 2013

A shooting in East Big Spring early this morning left one man dead and another charged with murder.
Twenty-six-year-old Carlos Guerrero suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest during the alleged altercation, which took place shortly after midnight in the 1000 block of Stadium.
Guerrero was transported to Scenic Mountain Medical Center where he later died from the injury. He was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Bennie Green.
Sean Smith, 22, has been charged with murder.
