Rabid bat discovered; no major threat

Big Spring Police Department is notifying the public that on Thursday, its animal control division captured a bat that has tested to be infected with rabies.
Other bats were captured the same week and were also sent for testing. Tests on all the other bats were confirmed negative for rabies, said Det. Sgt. Tony Everett, BSPD public information officer.

Tumbleweed Smith to be inducted into Texas Trail of Fame

Tumbleweed Smith of Big Spring, newspaper columnist and producer of The Sound of Texas radio series, will be inducted into the Fort Worth Stockyards Trail of Fame on Oct. 26.

The organization recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the creation and preservation of the western way of life and western heritage. The program has recognized 130 individuals since its inception in 1997.

Firefighters’ memorial ceremony set Saturday

Bells will ring out across the nation this weekend in remembrance of firefighters who have died in the line of duty.

Bells Across America, a national ceremony honoring fallen firefighters, will be held locally at 10 a.m. Saturday at the entrance of First United Methodist Church.

Roy Clayton Shaffer

Roy Clayton Shaffer (Buddy), 71, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, in a local hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.., Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at Trinity Baptist Church with Dr. Randy Cotton and Associate Pastor Joey Bacon officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.

Pauline Schuelke

Pauline Schuelke, 94, of Ackerly, Texas, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, in a Lubbock hospice facility. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 at the First Bapitst Church of Ackerly with Dr. Stan Blevins, Jeff Scott and Corbin Young, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013, at the funeral home.

She was born Oct. 27, 1918, in Hoxie, Texas and married Fred Schuelke April 27, 1939 in Georgetown, Texas. He preceded her in death February 17, 2002.

Douglas Mack Green

Douglas Mack Green, Ph.D., 71, of Redmond, Wash., formerly of Big Spring, Texas died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013 at Baylor McKinney Hospital. Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at Trinity Memorial Park.

Luz Gonzales Guzman

Luz Gonzales Guzman, 86, of Fort Worth, Texas and formerly of Big Spring, Texas, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013 in Fort. Worth. Viewing hours will be from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at Guardian Angels in Fort. Worth. Rosary will be at 3 p.m. Sunday and burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 at Laurel Land Cemetery of Fort Worth.

She was born Aug. 16, 1927 to Cassimera and Amado Gonzales. She married Felix Guzman who preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and a Catholic.

Gerri 'Nana' Randle

Gerri "Nana" Randle, 55, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013 at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Michael Willard, pastor at Cornerstone Covenant Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Mitchell County Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 9, 1958 in Colorado City, Texas to Ruby Lynn and Elmer Randle. She was a Juvenile Probation Officer in Nolan, Mitchell and Howard Counties for over 32 years. She was a member of Cornerstone Covenant Church.

Lillian Brantley

Lillian Brantley, 89, of Stanton, died Thursday, October 3, 2013 in a Bronte nursing home. Her services are pending with Gilbreath Funeral Home of Stanton.

Angel Tree apps to be accepted starting Monday

Local Salvation Army officials are gearing up for their annual Angel Tree drive.

The campaign, which encourages residents to give clothing and toys to children of low-income during the holiday season, will begin when the SA starts accepting applications Monday.

Ada Lafler of the local SA said the agency will accept applications from qualifying families at the local headquarters, located at 811 W. Fifth.

Application hours will be from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. through the week.
