Drill helps ensure safety prepardness at refinery

The Big Spring Refinery held its annual emergency response drill Thursday morning which involved a plethora of state, local and national agencies.

“It’s an annual emergency response drill we have as part of our obligations with the Texas Railroad Commission since we have underground storage wells,” said Randy Hillman, general manager of logistics at Alon USA Big Spring Refinery and a member of the incident command team. “It’s a great way for us, Alon and for the community to be involved and train in the event of a real emergency,”

Donald L. “Don” Edds, age 75, of Lake Brownwood, Texas formerly of Midland, Texas, passed away Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 at his residence. Cremation is under the direction of the Heartland Funeral Home of Early, Texas.

Forsan Cross Country — District champ again

LUBBOCK — Forsan brought home its sixth straight district championship after edging No. 2 Sundown Wednesday at Mae Simmons Park.

Jeremy Cervantes led the Buffaloes — as well as the entire field — with a first place finish. Tyler Evans came in second overall and Matthew Mims placed third as Forsan runners populated the top spots. Justin Goff also turned in a top 10 performance, finishing ninth. Cody Tanis earned a 15th place finish and Joshua Evans and Granger Newton claimed 18th and 20th, respectively, giving FHS a point total of 27 to rival Sundown's 34.

Council nixes garbage rate hike again

The second verse was the same as the first.

After plenty of impassioned — and sometimes heated — debate during their Tuesday meeting, the Big Spring City Council once again voted against raising the garbage collection fees for local residents and businesses.

The same four council members who voted down the measure in September — Marcus Fernandez, Carmen Harbour, Glen Carrigan and Marvin Boyd — voted against the rate hike, while Mayor Larry McLellan was joined by Bobby McDonald and Raul Benavides is supporting the increase.
