Student arrested on terroristic threat charge

A Big Spring High School student was arrested for allegedly detailing how he intended to harm or kill Big Spring ISD personnel and students.

Michael Wayne Peterson, 17, 1104.5 Lancaster is free on $1,500 bail after being arrested on a charge of terroristic threat earlier this week.

Big Spring Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Tony Everett said the incident began at about 4 p.m. Tuesday when a journal containing “disturbing information” was found on a BSISD school bus.

Junior high raises monies for breast cancer awareness

As the principal of Big Spring Junior High School, Dalia Benavides serves as the school's strict disciplinarian and leader. When it came down to seeing through on a promise, she kissed a pig.

BSJHS held its annual Pink-Out rally Thursday afternoon, a breast cancer awareness event and school pep rally to energize junior steer athletes in their game against Snyder held later that night.

Larry James, 59, of Big Spring, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at Texas Specialty Hospital in Lubbock. The family will receive friends Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Milton Mow, 73, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Chaplain Cherise Felty officiating.

Milton was born Jan. 27, 1940, in Coleman, Texas and married Nell Benson Jan. 18, 1964, in Big Lake.

Flu season approaching

Leaves are changing and a chill is in the air — not to mention coughs, runny noses and sneezes. Fall is here, and with it comes the advent of flu season, which means it’s time to get your annual flu immunization.

Influenza (the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious cases can result in hospitalization or death.

Murder suspect held here on $850, 000 bond

A Stanton man remains in custody after being charged with murder in the early Monday shooting death of 26-year-old Carlos Guerrero,

Sean Smith, 22, of 417 N. College in Stanton, is in custody at the Howard County Law Enforcement Center this morning in lieu of $850,000 bond, officials said.

Smith was charged with murder in the shooting death of Guerrero, which occurred shortly after midnight Monday.

Commissioners name Halfmann peace justice

Howard County commissioners named Quail Dobbs’ long-time secretary to replace him as justice of the peace for the Sand Springs-Coahoma area.

Linda Halfmann, who has worked in the Coahoma office of Dobbs — the incumbent JP for Precinct 2, Place 2 — for the past six years, was selected for the position during the commissioners’ regular meeting Tuesday morning.

She will serve the remainder of Dobbs’ term, which runs through Jan. 1, 2015, County Judge Mark Barr said.
