Danny Smith, Sr., 66, of Vincent, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at his residence. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Vincent Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter McCall officiating. He will be buried in Vincent Cemetery with Military Honors.
Marchie Elevenie Settles, 88, of Big Spring, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, in a local nursing home. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at the Trinity Memorial Park Peace Chapel in Big Spring with Bishop Carl Condray officiating.
Marchie was born March 11, 1925, in Saint Jo, Texas, to Charles Wesley Dunford Oliver and Willie Bernice James, and married Burr Lea Settles November 7, 1947, in Fredericksburg, Texas. He preceded her in death Nov.6, 1999.
Atmos Energy's proposed rate hike probably won't be going into effect as soon as the company would like.
When Big Spring's City Council meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, it will consider an emergency resolution suspending the Nov. 22 effective date of Atmos' proposed rate increase.
Atmos recently filed a proposed rate hike with the state railroad commission which, if approved, would increase the company's annual revenue by $12 million.
An appointment to the 911 Communications District board of directors is expected to highlight a routine meeting of the Howard County Commissioners Court Tuesday.
The meeting will convene at 10 a.m. Tuesday on the third floor of the county courthouse.
Howard County has two representatives, each of whom serve two-year terms, on the board. Also, the cities of Big Spring, Coahoma and Forsan all name representatives to the body.

Featured professional performers are Pipers E.J. Jones, Doug Frobese, Richard Kean and drummer Stephen Cameron.
All four musicians have competed on the international level, including at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, on multiple occasions.
At 7 p.m., The bagpipers will enter St. Maryâ€™s playing â€śHighland Cathedralâ€ť and â€śAmazing Graceâ€ť and will play a medley of traditional Scottish tunes as part of the service. The service concludes with a drum solo by Cameron.

Newly appointed Herald general manager Rick Nunez wants everyone to know there are absolutely no fees to enter the Herald's 28th Annual Christmas Parade.
â€śWe've had more and more entries as we get closer to the deadline,â€ť said Nunez, â€śBut there is still plenty of time to enter and it's free to enter. There are no fees at all.â€ť
â€śThe deadline is Nov. 15, to enter a float to be judged,â€ť Nunez said, â€śThe parade will be held Dec. 7, and we welcome all entries.â€ť
Mark Stiles, 81, of Big Spring died Wednesday Nov. 6, 2013, at his residence. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
He was born Jan. 30, 1932, to Henrietta Ellen (Cheatom) and Opal Gold Stiles in Boliver, Mo. He has been a resident of Howard County for more than 38 years. He was a self-employed painter. He was a member of Grace Fellowship Church of God.
