What we have here is a failure to communicate.
The recent wave of ice storms have done more than just send temperatures plunging and turn roads into skating rinks â€” it has also done serious damage to Howard Countyâ€™s communication system.
A tower that county agencies â€” including the sheriffâ€™s office â€” used was felled during the ice storm that hit this area the week of Thanksgiving, leaving communication with deputies and other emergency responders in certain areas of the county dicey at best.
Yes, Virginia, there will be a Christmas parade.
The Big Spring Herald Community Christmas Parade, postponed last Saturday because of adverse weather conditions, has been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. this Saturday. An early weather forecast from the National Weather Service calls for temperatures in the low 50s during the day Saturday, indicating a much more suitable climate.
Heritage Museum is working on damage from a burst waterline and will annouce later in the week whether Breakfast with Santa and other activities will be held Saturday.
Tim Ballard, 52, of Big Spring,Texas died Friday Dec. 6, 2013, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Memorial Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church. Private interment will be at Trinity Memorial Park.
OLNEY â€” Mary Green, age 81, died Dec. 9, 2013, at Parkview Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Big Spring, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at the Hamilton Street Church of Christ in Olney, Texas, with Scotte Clark, minister, officiating. Interment will follow in Restland Cemetery in Olney. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney.
Tom E. Wood, 63, of Petty, while in Tulsa, Okla., died Tuesday Nov. 26, 2013, from cancer. Starrett Funeral Home will conduct a memorial service at 1 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 3, 2013, at Lamar Avenue Church of Christ, with Patrick Cannon officiating.
Hayes Franklin Stripling Jr., 87, of Big Spring, Texas, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church in Big Spring with the Rev. Keith Wiseman, the Rev. Bill Ivins and the Rev. Barbara Kirk-Norris officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at the funeral home.
