Nativity scene to ‘come alive’ Friday evening

For the past 27 years, the First Church of the Nazarene's Drive Through Living Nativity has been a part of the Christmas tradition in Big Spring. It began with seven scenes and has grown over the years – with 14 on view this year.

Spring Tabernacle toy give-away Friday

For the people at Spring Tabernacle Ministries, the real joy of the Christmas season is found in giving, rather than receiving, presents.

Spring Tabernacle, located at 1208 Wright St., will hold its 18th annual Christmas gift give-away beginning at 9 a.m. Friday and continuing for as long as toys and other gifts last.

Parents of children ages 2 to 12 may receive up to four gifts per child during the event, Minister Mona Lue Tonn said.

Mildred Vaughn, 96, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, in a Mansfield, Texas nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Ken McIntosh officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Steers fall to Monterey; Coahoma, Forsan boys win

BIG SPRING — After a hard-fought matchup, Big Spring fell to Lubbock Monterey 65-59 Tuesday at Steer Gym.

Though it was a loss, BSHS Head Coach Ian Ritchey thought his squad turned in a strong performance.

“I thought we played much better against a very good team from a bigger school,” he said. “It was only our second game with our whole team and we’re starting to gel and show many signs of good things to come.”

Leading the Steers were Matt Yanez with 13 points, Tavaris Walker with 12 and Tyler Wigington with 11.

Next up for Big Spring will be a tournament in Andrews.

Kolby Self named "Built Ford Tough Texas Player of the Week"

FORSAN — Senior running back Kolby Self was honored Tuesday at Forsan High School with the statewide award “Built Ford Tough Texas Player of the Week” at the 1A level.

Self earned the award for a particularly stellar performance in the final week of the regular season to propel FHS into the playoffs.

He rushed a season-high 35 times for 313 yards and four TDs, including the game-winning score late in the fourth quarter, in a 38-35 win over Winters.

Ice storm fells county comm tower

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

The recent wave of ice storms have done more than just send temperatures plunging and turn roads into skating rinks — it has also done serious damage to Howard County’s communication system.

A tower that county agencies — including the sheriff’s office — used was felled during the ice storm that hit this area the week of Thanksgiving, leaving communication with deputies and other emergency responders in certain areas of the county dicey at best.

Christmas parade a 'go' for Saturday

Yes, Virginia, there will be a Christmas parade.

The Big Spring Herald Community Christmas Parade, postponed last Saturday because of adverse weather conditions, has been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. this Saturday. An early weather forecast from the National Weather Service calls for temperatures in the low 50s during the day Saturday, indicating a much more suitable climate.

Heritage Museum is working on damage from a burst waterline and will annouce later in the week whether Breakfast with Santa and other activities will be held Saturday.

Memorial Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church. Private interment will be at Trinity Memorial Park.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at the Hamilton Street Church of Christ in Olney, Texas, with Scotte Clark, minister, officiating. Interment will follow in Restland Cemetery in Olney. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney.
