Mildred Shortes

January 21, 2013

Mildred Shortes, 87 of Cisco passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, in Breckenridge, Texas. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Peace Chapel in Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring, Texas, officiated by Don Tarbet. Services are under the direction of Kimbrough Funeral Home of Cisco.
Visitation with the family will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mildred was born May 18, 1925, in Coahoma, Texas, to James Roy and Faytie (Williams) Bennett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell Shortes Sr.

Izell Johnson

Izell Johnson, 99, of Big Spring died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with Howard Adams officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
Izell was born Dec. 28, 1913, in Smithville, Texas, and married Will Johnson on Oct. 28, 1934, in Smithville. He preceded her in death March 29, 2002. She was a member of Highway 80 Church of Christ.

Mary Jane (McClendon) Miller

Mary Jane (McClendon) Miller, 86, of Dallas, formerly of Big Spring died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, in Red Oak. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Trinity Memorial Park.
She was born Feb. 7, 1926, in Octavia, Okla., to Elva and William McClendon. She grew up in Big Spring but spent most of her adult life in Garland and Dallas. For more than 20 years she was an executive secretary at Larue-Moore and Schafer Oil Exploration in Dallas and was very instrumental in the company’s success. She was a Baptist.

Ann Reynolds Moore

Ann Reynolds Moore passed away during the evening of Jan. 18, 2013, after a short illness. She is now with her Lord and Savior. She was 92 years old.
She was born Nov. 3, 1920, in Liberty, Miss., to William Henry Reynolds and Ina Wilkinson Reynolds. She was the fourth child. She had three older brothers and one younger brother.
She graduated from Liberty High School on April 26, 1938, then attended the School of Nursing at King’s Daughters Hospital in Brookhaven, Miss., for three years. She graduated Jan. 15, 1942, as a registered nurse.

Bob Horn

Bob Horn, 83, of Coahoma died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at the Fairview Cemetery in Hubbard, Texas.
Bob was born April 5, 1929, in Hill County, Texas, where he grew up and attended Hubbard High School. He joined the United States Army in 1947, returning to West Texas in 1951, where he started a lifetime career in the oil field.

Guild to host tea, style show

The Big Spring Symphony Guild will host its second annual “Dressed to a Tea” fundraiser 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at First Christian Church, 911 Goliad.
Tickets for the event are $15 per person and reservations can be made by calling 432-264-7671.
“Dressed to a Tea” will include a luncheon/tea and Victorian style show. Seating is limited, so people are urged to make their reservations soon. School aged children are welcome with an accompanying adult.

Webb to highlight symphony performance

Dr. Charles Webb, one of the most highly admired pianists, performers and judges in the musical world — and a former Big Spring resident, to boot — will highlight “Classic Wonders,” another in the 2012-2013 season series of the Big Spring Symphony Orchestra.
The performance is set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2 in the Big Spring Municipal Auditorium, under the direction of Dr. Keith Graumann. Tickets are $18 for adults, $13 for seniors and $8 for students.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• FERNANDO DELGADO, 18, of 707 E. 12th St., was arrested Sunday on charges of selling, manufacturing, distributing or possession of fictitious driver's license or ID certificate, possession of marijuana in a drug free zone – two ounces or less and consumption of alcohol by a minor.
• ESTEBON GANDARA, 32, of Garland, Texas, was arrested Sunday on a warrant from another agency and a warrant for failure to identify – giving false information.

Lady Hawks dominate Cowgirls 66-37

The Lady Hawks (13-7, 1-3) had an opening on the schedule due to a cancellation by Mountain View Junior College, so HC Head Women's Basketball Coach Earl Diddle took advantage of Southwest Texas Junior College's visit to the area and set up a game with the Cowgirls.

“We had a chance to play since they were up here on the SWCID capus,” Diddle said. “It worked out well. They have a good team — they play other WJCAC teams as well — this late in the year, it's better than a practice and we were able to accomplish a lot of things.”

Steers stage late rally, but fall to Greenwood in wild finish

The Steers may have fallen to 0-3 in District 4-3A play Friday at Steer Gym, but they still gave the fans their money's worth during the 54-49 loss to Greenwood.

Big Spring started off strong, outscoring the Rangers 15-9 in the first quarter. Greenwood mounted an attack and went on a 15-6 run in the second period, including a three-point shot which gave them the lead four minutes before the halfway mark. The Steers went into the locker room at the break down 26-21.
