Fight the flu: Some sensible precautions you can take

The flu virus is being tracked in approximately half the counties in Texas, with many county health departments already reporting the number of hospital and doctor visits for influenza higher than last year's totals, according to recent reports from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

While having the flu may mean an inconvenient, indoor vacation for a couple of days to most, those considered to be at high-risk for the virus should take measures to protect themselves, according to Big Spring Fire Department and EMS Chief Craig Ferguson.

Coahoma ISD trustees to discuss safety procedures

COAHOMA — Student safety and school security will be the main topics of discussion when Coahoma Independent School District trustees hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the administration building board room.

In the wake of the Newtown, Conn., School shootings which claimed 20 first-graders and six educators last month, student safety has become of prime concern for both parents and education professionals.

“I've said it before: Our job is to educate our students, but our No. 1 goal is to ensure their safety,” CISD Superintendent Amy Jacobs said.

Bascum 'Doodle' Trammell

Bascum “Doodle” Trammell, 82, of Mansfield, formerly of Big Spring, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at the Dicey Community Cemetery in Parker County.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at the Blessing Funeral Home, located in Mansfield, Texas.

She was born March 16, 1930, in Hardy, Ky., and married Louie Trammell on Dec. 21, 1946. He preceded her in death Nov. 2, 1988.

Sandi Jean Allen

Sandi Jean Allen, 49, of Glasscock County died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, in Glasscock County. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Billy Guy of Full Gospel Fellowship officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Memorial Park.

She was born June 1, 1963, at Levelland, Texas. She married Rex Allen, Aug. 12, 1983, in Big Spring. Sandi was a lifelong resident of Glasscock and Howard counties.

Carmen A. Chavarria

Carmen A. Chavarria of Austin, Texas, formerly of Big Spring, Texas, passed away in her daughter's home Jan. 10, 2013. She was born Feb. 20, 1920, and worked for the Big Spring State Hospital almost 30 years.

However, Carmen's main job was being an amazing grandmother to Suzanne Subia Sparks, Valerie A. Subia and Lisa C. Subia, who all reside and work in the Austin area. It would be impossible to list the countless ways she helped us all with our educations and careers.

Carol Lynn Odom, 67, of Tyler, Texas, passed away in Plano, Texas, on Jan. 14, 2013. She was born June 11, 1945, in Kermit, Texas.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at Austin Memorial Park under the direction of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas.

Forsan ISD looks for answers in Newtown's wake

FORSAN — When it comes to student safety and security procedures, Forsan Independent School officials don't consider “good” good enough.

A review of safety and security protocols in the school district left officials giving FISD a passing grade, but they were quick to add improvements could and probably will be made — up to and including the possibility of arming district personnel.
