Landfill payout cause of contention

Tempers flared Tuesday night as Big Spring Mayor Tommy Duncan and Howard County Precinct 3 Commissioner Jimmie Long went toe-to-toe during the city council meeting over an alleged ultimatum delivered by the city regarding future use of a new municipal landfill.

The city and county have been locked in negotiations regarding how the county should help pay for the purchase of property and operation of a new landfill planned for the municipality in the next few years.

Big Spring ISD donating Bauer to Head Start program

After a year of silence, the grounds at Bauer Elementary will soon echo again with the sound of children.

The Bauer campus, which has stood vacant since last May, is expected to be back in the business of educating young people, this time as the location for the local Head Start program.

Big Spring Independent School District trustees approved donating the campus to Greater Opportunities of the Permian Basin, which oversees Head Start operations in Big Spring, during their monthly board meeting.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. today:
• TERRY MARQUEZ, 28, of 1412 Stadium, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant from another agency.
• GARY LYNN HILDEBRAND, 40, of Robert Lee, Texas, was arrested Tuesday on two warrants from other agencies.
• BILLIE RAY BROWN, 54, of Midland, Texas, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
• MICHAEL RENE ROBLES, 40, of 2509 Fairchild, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of assault – family violence.

Erin Christopher Gregg, 33, of Kerrville passed away March 24, 2013, in Kerrville, Texas. He was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, to James Richard Gregg and Barbara Smith Fields on July 20, 1979. Erin had four wonderful children, Kaylee Gregg of Kerrville, Blake Anderson of Saint Jo, Paxton Gregg of Stephenville and Hannah Gregg of Saint Jo.

Egg hunts, concert on the way

It's going to be a busy weekend in Big Spring with a lot of bunny hopping and music.

• Friday, the Lamun-Lusk-Sanches Texas State Veterans Home will hold its 6th Annual Easter Egg Hunt at 2 p.m. on the facility's grounds. Free to the public, the event will feature Easter egg hunting in three age groups as well as food, drinks, games and more.

Mountain run, walk nears

Running and walking enthusiasts from all over the Permian Basin will test their meddle against one of the area's biggest challenges — the historic Scenic Mountain — on April 13, as Big Spring State Park prepares to host the 15th annual Master the Mountain Fun Run and Walk.

Registration for the event is under way for the 5K and 10K contests along the facility's hills and slopes.

• RYAN ANTHONY MOSTY, 22, 1412 Tucson, was arrested on three warrants from another agency.
• CRIMINAL MISCHIEF was reported in the 800 block of W. 16th.
• BURGLARY OF A BUILDING was reported in the 2400 block of Driver Road.
• BURGLARY OF A VEHICLE was reported in the 200 block of N.E. 12th.
• THEFT was reported in the 3600 block of W. Highway 80 and the 2000 block of S. Gregg.
