Mathew Ryan Hernandez, infant son of Marie and Manuel Hernandez of big Spring, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Covenant Women's and Children's Hospital in Lubbock. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at Myers and Smith Chapel with Deacon Johnny Arguello officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

In addition to his parents, Mathew is survived by his twin brother, Manuel Rudy Hernandez Jr.; his grandparents, Olga and Cruz Sanchez and Viola and Richard Villa, all of Big Spring; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Carjacking thwarted, one in custody

A Dallas man is in custody facing serious charges after law enforcement officials say he attempted to car-jack a vehicle at the Murphy USA gas station in the Walmart SuperCenter parking lot Tuesday morning.

Byron Shedd, 29, was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and evading arrest near the local gas station — located in the 200 block of W. Marcy — and booked into the Howard County Detention Center.

Sands to hold graduation Friday

ACKERLY — Jennifer Renee Franco and Preston Zant will lead the Sands High School Class of 2013 when it holds graduation exercises Friday.

Franco, the daughter of Patricia Franco and the late Sonny Franco, is class valedictorian with a grade point average of 94.92. She is a member of the National Honor Society and student council and was a regional qualifier in UIL academics this year.

In athletics, she was active in basketball, track and cross-country.

She plans to attend Midland College in the fall and study diagnostic medical sonography.

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. May 21, 2013 and 7 a.m. today:
• RICHARD LEE OLIVAS, 26, of 1600 Donley, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
• BYRON DELOREAN SHEDD, 30, of 1319 Harding was arrested Tuesday on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest/detention and aggravated robbery.
• BRANDON JOE ROBINSON, 27, of 1317 Elm St., was arrested Tuesday on two warrants from another agency.

Thomas R. Shirley, 81, of Kingsland, formerly of Big Spring, died Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the Windchime at the Village in Kingsland. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park with the Rev. James "Jakie" Shirley, Tom's brother, officiating.

Tom will lie in state at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home from Tuesday until service time Thursday.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Bill Ivins, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Ken McMeans officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the funeral home.

She was born May 2, 1926, in Big Spring, Texas and married John R. Stanley May 11, 1946, in Big Spring, Texas. He preceded her in death April 5, 1996.
