Blake Edward Hogue

Blake Edward Hogue of Odessa unexpectedly left his temporary home much too soon to meet his mother in Heaven on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at the age of 22. He was at home with his faithful best friend, Buddy.

Blake was born in Odessa, Texas, to Bobby Joe Hogue and Susan Kathleen Weeks on July 2, 1990. 

Blake was preceded in death by his mother, Susan Kathleen Weeks; his grandfathers, John Edward Reese and VL Hogue; his grandmother, Alice Lazelle Reese; and his great-grandfather Herman Shifflett.

Thomas Lopez, 64, of Waxahachie, formerly of Big Spring died April 27, 2013. Vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish with Monsignor Bernard L. Gully, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Moving up, moving out: McLellan gives up trustee post for mayor's role

The city's gain is Howard College's loss.

When Larry McLellan formally steps up as Big Spring mayor tonight, he also will step down as a trustee for the Howard County Junior College District.

The state secretary of state's office has ruled that the two offices are “incompatible” and cannot be held at the same time. Therefore, when McLellan takes the mayoral oath of office today, he will, by matter of law, resign from his college trustee position.

Council to focus on pending runoff

Big Spring City Council convenes at 5:30 p.m. today to call for a run-off election June 8 to decide the fate of the District 5 council seat.

Candidate Raul Benavides garnered the most votes in Saturday's election — 187 — while opponents J.D. Smith had 143 and Clint Collins tallied 93).

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. May 13, 2013 and 7 a.m. today:
• JOSE HILARIO MARTINEZ, 26, of 1505 E. Cherokee, was arrested Monday on a charge of public intoxication.
• NOEL GARCIA III, 31, of 1011 Stadium, was arrested Monday on a warrant from another agency.
• RICHARD LEE OLIVAS, 26, of 1600 Donley, was arrested Monday for possession of marijuana less than or equal to 2 ounces in a drug free zone and evading arrest/detention.
• GORDON WESLEY TAYLOR, 54, of 4200 Center Point Rd., was arrested Monday on a charge of speeding.

Hawks drop heartbreaker to Midland, still alive at tourney

GRAND PRAIRIE — Again, Midland College is a thorn in Howard College's side.

The Hawks (37-22) were cruising at the NJCAA Region V Tournament, having defeated tough opponents in No. 10 Grayson College, then New Mexico Junior College in the first two rounds of play.
