Karen Battle Halfmann, 52, of St. Lawrence died Monday, June 10, 2013, at her residence. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
Curtis A. Luke, 59, of Big Spring died Sunday, June 9, 2013, in a local hospital. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
Berry Cox, 66, of Garden City died Friday, June 7, 2013, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Coby Abney officiating. Interment will follow at Garden City Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryle Cox of Garden City; two sons, B. Shawn Cox and wife Joan Admirand of Austin and B. Tod Cox and wife Brenda of Spring; five grandchildren; and a sister, Kay Sowders of Midland.
William Mac Statham, 65, of Big Spring died Friday, June 7, 2013. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Chapel.
He was born May 2, 1948, in Hobbs, N.M., to Cara and William Statham. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a licensed vocational nurse, working at the state hospital and nursing homes. He lived most of his life in Big Spring. At an early age, he was ordained a minister in the Pentecostal church and in later years, he was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
The Big Spring City Council will canvass the results of the Saturday night runoff between District 5 challengers during its Tuesday meeting, awarding the position to Raul Benavides, who won the election with 63 percent of the vote.
Benavides and challenger J.D. Smith first met in the May 11 election â joined by fellow political hopeful Clint Collins â with Benavides taking top honors with 44.21 percent (187 ballots) of the vote, while opponents Smith won 33.81 percent (143 ballots) and Clint Collins took 21.99 percent (93 ballots).
It's a homecoming of sorts for the interim director of the local VA medical center.
Andrew âAndyâ M. Welch, currently director of the Amarillo VA Health Care System, is pulling double duty of sorts for the next few months â he has been named interim director of the West Texas VA Health Care System based in Big Spring, but will continue serving in Amarillo as well.
In Big Spring, Welch succeeds Daniel Marsh, who resigned in late May to become director of the VA medical center in Oklahoma City.
Welch assumed his interim duties here June 2.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
â˘ JOSE CASTRO, 42, transient, was arrested Sunday on a charge of public intoxication.
â˘ JACOB ALEXANDER GALAN, 23, of 1607 S. Main St., was arrested Sunday on charges of evading arrest or detention, public intoxication and shoplifting - $50 or less.
â˘ TYLER JAMES SMITH, 28, of Sweetwater, Texas, was arrested Sunday on charges of hindering officers discharging official duties and public intoxication.
