There's only a week to go before the fireworks literally start.
The 16th annual Pops in the Park Independence Day celebration, featuring music, food, fun and fireworks, is set for next Wednesday at the Comanche Trail Park Amphitheater.
While the highlight of the evening will undoubtedly be the annual fireworks display â€” complete with musical accompaniment from the Big Spring Symphony â€” there will be lots more for people to enjoy, Pops Committee Chairperson Kelly Seales said.
Texas voters looking to cast a ballot in upcoming elections can prepare to pony-up a picture ID, as a landmark Supreme Court ruling issued this week will allow the state to activate its controversial voter ID law, according to Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.
After the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the formula that determines which states must petition Washington before making elections changes, Abbott said Texas' voter ID law would take effect immediately.
Douglas E. Beams, 61, formerly of Big Spring, died Thursday, June 20, 2013 in Hawaii. The family will receive friends 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM Saturday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Saturday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Jake Merritt, Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Memorial Park.
Holston Banks Sr., 72, of Big Spring died Friday, June 21, 2013, in Temple. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
ODESSA â€” The 10-year-old Big Spring Little League All-Stars trailed Jim Parker 3-1 after the first inning of play, but turned the tide in the second inning, scoring four runs to take a 5-3 lead over the host team.
Big Spring went on to add 10 more runs in the outing, winning by a score of 15-5.
Jim Parker's offense floundered, while Big Spring's bats were relentless.
Manager of the Big Spring 10-year-old squad Isaac Miramontes cited aggressive hitting and effective base running as the keys to the victory, as well as a strong perfromance by pitcher Brandon Valdez.
