When Big Spring Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Phillip Ritchey began his search for a new baseball coach and basketball coach at the varsity level, he didn't anticipate both of them being plucked from 2A Skidmore-Tynan, located near Corpus Christi.
Bobby Smith, a successful baseball manager Ritchey has worked with in the past, and Adam Woolam, who brings 14 years of head basketball coaching experience with him, have been tapped to fill the vacancies left by former coaches Bert Otto and Cliff Thompson.
Howard County commissioners gave the go-ahead to sell a county-owned tract of land on the north side of Big Spring during their Monday meeting, a prospect that could have a new hotel going up in the area.
The tract of land — a half-block near the county's Road and Bridge Administration office in the north part of the city — has been the focus of attention several times in the past several months, as real estate developers have approached the court about purchasing and developing the property.
Pint-sized patriotism will be on display this July 4.
For about 40 years, the Highland July 4 Parade has shown that you don't have to be an adult to show off your love of country.
The annual parade will be held along Highland Drive beginning at 10 a.m. July 4, said Melanie Lawdermilk, parade organizer. Participants will line up at the intersection of Highland and Robb streets at 9:30 a.m., then parade west on Highland to the intersection with Goliad.
While plenty of youngsters are expected to be on hand, Lawdermilk said she needs some help from the area's grownups, as well.
