City council: Temporary housing ordinance passes first reading

July 10, 2013

Big Spring City Council approved first reading of an ordinance designed to define and shape the use of modular homes, temporary workforce housing and “man camps” on a 4-3 vote Tuesday night, much to the chagrin of at least one local family.

The ordinance — which was commissioned by the council in hopes of limiting the damaging effects of the oil boom associated with the Cline Shale discovery — takes a number of steps to regulate how the “man camps” and other temporary housing will be used within the city limits.

Superintendent contract, pay raises on trustees' agenda

July 10, 2013

Big Spring public school trustees will revisit Superintendent Steven Saldivar's contract situation when they hold their monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the high school board room.

Trustees raised some eyebrows in June when they declined without comment to extend Saldivar's contract following their annual evaluation of his job performance. The non-action was notable because it is standard operating procedure for school boards to add at least one year to a superintendent's contract following a satisfactory evaluation.
