Cleta Barber, 66, of Stanton died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at her residence. She will lie in state at the funeral home Monday and Tuesday. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. David Harp, pastor, officiating.
She was born March 9, 1947, in Hobbs, N.M., and married Joe Barber in December of 1963 in Stanton, Texas.
Joe Thomas Swinney, 81, of Rising Star, formerly of Coahoma died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, in Sugar Land, Texas. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Coahoma Cemetery.
He was born Dec.30, 1931, in Bailey, Texas, to Eula (Freemon) and Jeff Swinney. He married Melva Jean Allen on Sept. 1, 1951, in Big Spring, Texas. He was an electrician by trade. He served as the mayor of Coahoma and mayor of Rising Star. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Marijo Walker, 72, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, in a Midland hospital after a two-year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Calvary Callender officiating. Entombment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park Masoleum.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug.26, 2013, at the funeral home.
Budget matters are expected to highlight Tuesday's Big Spring City Council meeting, slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers, located at 307 E. Fourth St.
Assistant Finance Director Don Moore will make a presentation of the proposed and effective tax rates during the meeting and council members are expected to approve Sept. 10 as the date for the first public hearing on the the proposed tax rate and budget.
It's the last week to purchase a duck entry for the Second Quacker Challenge, which takes place at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Russ McEwen Family Aquatic Center.
Cost is $5 for each duck entry, or $45 for 10 ducks. Participants can purchase an entry at KBST, Western Bank, United Way, First Christian Church, Great Scott! T-shirts and the Howard County Library. Also, duck entries will be sold beginning at 3 p.m. at the aquatic center for those who want to watch the race.
