Fox and Roquemore Engagement

August 31, 2013

Baylea Morgin Fox and Michael Calvin “Rock” Roquemore, both of Lubbock, Texas will exchange wedding vows at 6 p.m. Nov. 2, 2013, at Trinity Baptist Church. A reception will follow at The Courtyard in Big Spring, Texas.
Baylea is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Fox of Big Spring, Texas and the late, Gary Heith Ware.
She is a 2009 graduate of Big Spring High School and a 2013 graduate of Texas Tech Health Science Center receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and is employed by Bob Jones Speech Language Hearing Center in Lubbock, Texas.

Cox Anniversary

Valcee and Bettie Cox celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with their family at a restaurant in Paris, France Aug. 17.
Mr. and Mrs. Cox, retired school teachers, were joined at the celebration by their son, Alan Cox and his daughter, Genevieve Cox, who live in Austin. There were also joined by their daughter, Amy Kinsey and her daughter Ally Kinsey, who live in Westminster, Colo. The Coxes were presented a 50th Anniversary decorative plate and treated to 10 days of sightseeing with their family.

County fair to be more 'kid friendly'

Howard County Fair officials are making a special effort to reach out to children this year.
The fair, which runs from Sept. 26-28, will have special hours reserved solely for area elementary students, organizers said.
There will be no admission fee between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, and Friday, Sept. 27, said Sandy Stewart of the fair association.
“These hours are available only to the (county) elementary schools and are not our regular hours,” Stewart said. “Exhibits have been planned to entertain and educate the children.”

Car run in town

Holiday prompts office closings

There will be very little laboring on Labor Day for area municipal and education employees.

In observance of Labor Day, most municipal and county offices will be closed Monday, officials said.

The City of Big Spring will close all offices, including the landfill, on Monday, and there will be no sanitation pickup, according to a news release from City Manager Todd Darden.

Emergency services (police, fire and ambulance) will continue normal operations and the On-Call Emergency Utilities Department can be contacted at 264-2392.

Belinda Baeza

Funeral mass for Mrs. Belinda Baeza of Big Spring, formerly of Stanton, has been set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Monsignor Schwertner officiating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. A rosary vigil will be Friday Aug. 30, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church at 7:30 p.m.

Eloisa Arriola

Eloisa Arriola, 85, of Big Spring died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at her residence. Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial in Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Barbara Russell, 81, of Big Spring died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, in a local nursing home. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.

Dunnam named BSSH superintendent

Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner Dr. David Lakey named Lorie Dunnam the superintendent of Big Spring State Hospital, effective Sunday.

Dunnam currently is the hospital’s assistant superintendent and oversees administration of the 200-bed facility, Big Spring’s largest employer.

Dunnam assisted long-time Superintendent Ed Moughon in managing more than 625 employees and a $29 million a year operating budget.

Moughon retired July 31 after serving as Big Spring State Hospital superintendent for 17 years.

Rod Run roars into town Friday
