Santos Diaz Lopez

Santos Diaz Lopez, 74, passed away Saturday, Aug.24, 2013, at his residence. Services for Mr. Lopez will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at The Church of the Blessed with Pastor Johnny Perez officiating. Burial will follow at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park under the direction of Broadway Funeral Directors. Mr. Lopez will lie in state at The Church of the Blessed all day today with a Celebration of Life service being held tonight at 7 p.m.

Vicki Lynn Parks, 59, passed away at her home in Colorado Springs, Colo., Aug. 23, 2013, after a battle with brain cancer.

Cleta Barber, 66, of Stanton died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at her residence. She will lie in state at the funeral home Monday and Tuesday. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. David Harp, pastor, officiating.
She was born March 9, 1947, in Hobbs, N.M., and married Joe Barber in December of 1963 in Stanton, Texas.

Joe Thomas Swinney

Joe Thomas Swinney, 81, of Rising Star, formerly of Coahoma died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, in Sugar Land, Texas. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Coahoma Cemetery.
He was born Dec.30, 1931, in Bailey, Texas, to Eula (Freemon) and Jeff Swinney. He married Melva Jean Allen on Sept. 1, 1951, in Big Spring, Texas. He was an electrician by trade. He served as the mayor of Coahoma and mayor of Rising Star. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Marijo Walker

Marijo Walker, 72, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, in a Midland hospital after a two-year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013 at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel with the Rev. Calvary Callender officiating. Entombment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park Masoleum.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug.26, 2013, at the funeral home.

Council to mull budget, raises

August 26, 2013

Budget matters are expected to highlight Tuesday's Big Spring City Council meeting, slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers, located at 307 E. Fourth St.
Assistant Finance Director Don Moore will make a presentation of the proposed and effective tax rates during the meeting and council members are expected to approve Sept. 10 as the date for the first public hearing on the the proposed tax rate and budget.

Time to get your ducks in a row

It's the last week to purchase a duck entry for the Second Quacker Challenge, which takes place at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Russ McEwen Family Aquatic Center.
Cost is $5 for each duck entry, or $45 for 10 ducks. Participants can purchase an entry at KBST, Western Bank, United Way, First Christian Church, Great Scott! T-shirts and the Howard County Library. Also, duck entries will be sold beginning at 3 p.m. at the aquatic center for those who want to watch the race.

Lady Steers take 5-of-7 at Granbury

GRANBURY — The Lady Steers began their weekend tournament with a loss to Mansfield Summit on Friday, but then won their next five-of-six matches to take third place in the Silver Division.

Big Spring is gearing up for a tough District 4-3A schedule which includes Abilene Wylie and Monahans, both highly touted teams along with BSHS.

Big Spring Head Volleyball Coach Lynn Osborne believes there are no teams you can take lightly once district play begins.

She schedules as many larger schools and fiercely competitive opponents as possible to prepare her players for what lies ahead.

Susan Zack and Bob Lewis were married August 26, 1963 in El Paso, Texas. They met and have lived in
Big Spring most of their married life. 
Together they've built a successful business, become vital members of the community, raised a family and their friendship and partnership continue to thrive.
The couple recently celebrated their Golden Anniversary on a cruise with their sons Kevin and BZ and their families.
