It was âdouble your troubleâ for Big Spring residents and city work crews alike Thursday, as two major water transmission lines broke, leaving many residences and businesses without water and forcing local schools to dismiss classes early.
The first water break occurred on 10th Street next to Big Spring High School when a 20-inch line ruptured at approximately 3:30 a.m. Thursday. Roughly six hours later, another 20-inch line, this one located at Eighth and Baylor, broke as well.
Those of us who are old enough remember where we were and what we were doing the fateful day of Sept. 11, 2001.
A day that would change all of our lives and the lives of our progeny. Security has taken up residence in almost every nook and cranny of our lives and the feeling that our shores were secure is long gone.
But as guest speaker, Mike Meinen, U.S. Army OIF, said at the 9/11 Memorial At The Plaza Wednesday, âAmericans do not cower or bow down to her enemy,â Meinen commented. âThat quality is rare in the citizens of other countries.â
Homecoming celebrations at Big Spring High School will kick into high gear tonight and continue into the weekend.
School officials will literally light a match to homecoming festivities tonight when they ignite a bonfire located at the field west of the Little League baseball park on the Howard College campus. The bonfire will be lit between 8 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.
The Rev. J. Allan Guthrie, 84, of Coahoma, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2013. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Salem Cemetery with the Rev. Matt Miles of Fort Davis officiating.
Ronald Scott Phinney, 57, of Coahoma died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept.13, 2013, at Myers & Smith Chapel.
Joseph William 'Butch' Lesueur, 71, of Forsan died Sunday, Septe. 8, 2013. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at Forsan Baptist Church with the Rev. Darren Weaver, pastor, officiating.
He was born Dec. 13, 1941, in Pittsburg, Kans., and married Darla Morrell March 29, 2007, in Irving, Texas.
Edna "Tincy" Perry, 91, of Big Spring, died Thursday, September 12, 2013 in a local nursing home. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
