Not unexpectedly, enrollment down at Howard College

A simple rule of thumb still holds true for Howard College — when the economy is up, enrollment is down.

Preliminary enrollment numbers for the fall 2013 semester show what college officials expected — enrollment at the junior college district is down 9 percent from this time last year and an increase in energy sector hiring is the major reason why.

Opera star Graham to open Symphony season Saturday

Susan Graham, internationally known opera diva, will be the guest artist Saturday when the Big Spring Symphony orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Keith Graumann, begins its 32nd season.

Graham will be performing some of the most popular operatic arias from Carmen, the Marriage of Figaro and the Merry Widow. She’ll sing in both halves of the program, before and after the intermission and she’ll close the concert.

“We’re fortunate to have such a distinguished personality to open this year’s season,” said Graumann, symphony conductor. “She brings a lot of excitement to the stage.”

Carlene Barron, 73, of Seabrook, formerly of Big Spring died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept.19, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Carlene was born March 1, 1940, in Big Spring, Texas.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Barron of Seabrook; one daughter, Sheryl Swinney; and one son, Keith Barron.

Bonnie Foster, 93, of Big Spring died Monday, Sept.16, 2013, in a local nursing home. Her services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
