Big Spring man charged with shooting girlfriend

A Big Spring teenager is in critical condition and her boyfriend is in custody following a Thursday evening shooting.

Abigail Valencia, 17, was airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock shortly following the shooting, which occurred shortly before 6:45 p.m. Thursday in east Big Spring.

Big Spring Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Tony Everett said police responded to the Scenic Mountain Medical Center emergency room in reference to a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, they found Valencia suffering from a single gunshot wound to the left side of her head.

Remington replicas grace future park at the Hotel Settles

The Settles Hotel has attracted a lot of visitors since it reopened late last year — including a pair of cowboys on horseback.

As part of ongoing renovation and landscaping in the lot adjacent to the hotel, replicas of two Frederic Remington statues were relocated to the lot east of the hotel Monday, Settles Manager Bill Cole said.

The two bronze sculptures outside the Settles are titled “Cowboy” and “The Rattlesnake.”

Bobby Cordova

Bobby Cordova, 58, of Big Spring, died Wednesday, Sept.18, 2013, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 5 p,m, until 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Vigil and memorial services will follow at 7:30 p.m. at Myers & Smith Chapel. Additional services and burial will be in Logan, N.M., on Monday, Sept. 23, 2013.

Lou Ann (Nall) Baker

Lou Ann (Nall) Baker, 79, of Burke, Va., passed away after a battle with cancer. She was born in Big Spring in 1934 to Raymond (Poncho) Nall and Eva Nall (Big Spring Health Food Store original owner) and lived there until she attended Abilene Christian University.

She returned to Big Spring to work at Webb AFB until 1958 when she married Paul Baker, retired USAF. They lived in several places in the U.S. and overseas.

Lou Ann is survived by her husband; two daughters; five grandchildren; and three sisters, including Betty Ray (Nall) Coffee of Big Spring.
