A wise man once said, âLife is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.â Technically it was his mother instilling a little wisdom on her son, and boxes of chocolate usually have a diagram on the inside of the lid, but we all understood the sentiment.
This weekend's Life cover is a little bit like Mrs. Gump's metaphorical box of chocolate a little bit of what went on this past week. But instead of candy, a somewhat of a hodgepodge of pictures that didn't make the cut for one reason or another will grace the page.
Marj Carpenter just returned from the National Federation of Press Women Conference in Salt Lake City where she was a speaker at one of the banquets in the three day meeting.
Other speakers included Heloise of âHints from Heloiseâ and members of the Marie/Donnie Osmond family. Marj was honored at the rehearsal of the Latter Day Saints Choir as the former moderator of the Presbyterian Church U.S.A.
Hayes Franklin Striplng IV, grandson of Hayes Franklin Stripling II, of Big Spring, was recently awarded a doctoral degree at Texas A&M University.
âFourâ as he is affectionately called by his grandfather, received the doctorate in nuclear engineering and maintained a 4.0 gpa for the eight years he attended.
âBut heâs not just an egghead,â said his grandfather. âHeâs a tremendous athlete as well.â
Janet and Frank Somers and Dennis (Snuffy) Simmons of Big Spring, Texas are excited to announce the engagement of their son, Jerrod Simmons, to Tracye Wilkinson, both of Dallas, Texas.
The bride-elect is the daughter of Gregg and Julie Morgan of Amarillo and Ted and Renee Wilkinson of Lubbock, Texas. She is the granddaughter of Les and Freddye Carnes of Midland, Texas, and Bob and Freda Wilkinson of Levelland, Texas.
The groom-elect is the grandson of the late Shirley Davis, Bill Davis, and Pat Simmons, all of Big Spring, Texas.
Jimmy F. Fierro, 77, of Big Spring, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Domingo H. Rios, 87, of Big Spring died at his residence Thursday Sept. 5, 2013. Vigil services will be 7 p.m. Sunday Sept. 8, 2013, at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Msgr. Bernard Gully officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
Rebecca Renee Arocha, of San Antonio, Texas and John Allen Avant, of Big Spring will exchange wedding vows Oct. 12, 2013.
Rebecca is the daughter of Lisa and Lupe Lomas and Ann and Fidencio Arocha, all of San Antonio, Texas. She is a 2011 graduate of Big Spring High School and is employed at Kwikies as a cashier.
John is the son of Ms. Janet Avant and Mr. and Mrs. Don Avant. He graduated from homeschool in May 2005.
He is employed as the manager of Kwikies.
Pam passed away on Aug. 28, 2013, in Denton, Texas. Pam was born on Aug. 6, 1959 in Big Spring, Texas, to Jim and Betty Jordan.
She graduated from Greenwood High School and then earned an associateâs degree as an emergency medical Technician. In 1981, Pam graduated from the Permian Basin Police Academy. She served as police officer for 20 years and received numerous certifications, awards, recognitions and promotions to include city employee of the year.
PaceâLei Grace Lance, a girl, was born Aug. 12, 2013, at 12:17 p.m. She weighed 5 pounds 11 ounces and was 19 inches long.
She is the daughter of Angela and Blake Lance of Coahoma. Maternal grandparents are Donna and David Pace of Big Spring.
Paternal grandparents are Paul Lance of Coahoma and Lonnie and Vernette Hill of Big Spring.
PaceâLei was welcomed home by big brother Dylan Lance.
