A storm system carrying freezing rain began moving through the Crossroads area today, turning roads dangerously slick and forcing the cancellation of several events.
Up to a half-inch of freezing rain is forecast to coat area roads today as a result of the storm, which is expected to keep temperatures well below the freezing mark through most the weekend.
The Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce is currently conducting its 2nd annual Toy drive to assist five area organizations wich will distribute the donations throughout the community.
â€śThis is something we started last year,â€ť said Debbye ValVerde, Chamber executive director. â€śWe had several organizations we knew needed help, especially the Salvation Army. We donâ€™t want any child to do without.â€ť
Harold Hall, 92, of Big Spring, Texas died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at Parkview Nursing and Rehab. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Ken McIntosh, minister of First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be at Trinity Memorial Park.
Bertha Jolley, 85, of Big Spring died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at Midland Memorial Hospital. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.
Although Monday marked the official end of the United Way of Big Spring and Howard County 2013 campaign, officials are making one last big push to collect donations before the allocation process to the 17 area agencies begins.
â€śWe are currently at 50 percent of our goal,â€ť said Sandy Stewart, United Way executive director. â€śWe are trying to wrap up and get the monies in. Money is still coming in. Based on last yearâ€™s numbers, we should get close to what we made last year but maybe not quite as much.â€ť
Most everyone knows that Saturdayâ€™s Big Spring Herald Christmas Parade â€” in an effort to improve the increased flow of traffic on Gregg â€” will be moved a block east to Scurry. There are a few other alterations spectators and parade participants need to be aware of, as well.
Unlike the many parking areas available on Gregg, spectators are being asked not to park on the street along Scurry, so that the parade may flow smoothly.
Also, in cooperation with the city and other entities, there will be a designated dropoff area at the end of the parade.
Ludin A. DeHoyos, 66, of Big Spring, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013 at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Olive Memorial Park.
Lewis Shields, 83, of Big Spring, formerly of San Angelo, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, at Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home. Graveside services with military honors will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at Lawnhaven Memorial Park in San Angelo.
He was born Nov. 7, 1930 in Jones County, Texas to Lucile (Jackson) and R.A. Shields. He grew up in San Angelo. He had a landscaping business in San Angelo. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Navy on the U.S.S. Boxer.
