Manuel Rojo Gonzales Sr.

Manuel Rojo Gonzales Sr., 54, of Big Spring passed away Saturday, April 13, 2013, at his residence. Vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.
Manuel was born Dec. 25, 1958, in Big Spring, Texas, to Eufrasia and Guadalupe Gonzales. He was a lifetime resident of Big Spring. He was a shipping clerk for 20 years at Blue Bell Creameries. He helped with the Special Olympics each year and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Lillie Elizabeth Craven

Lillie Elizabeth Craven, 86, peacefully passed from this life to eternal life April 12, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at the Trinity Baptist Church with Dr. Randy Cotton officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2013, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.
Beth was born to William Aaron and Mary Jeanetta Sims-Beck on Feb. 15, 1927, in Olustee, Okla. Her father was a carpenter by trade and her mother was a homemaker. She was the seventh of 10 children.

Eagle Scout

Eagle Scout Jack Kennady, the son of John Kennady and Patti Jackson of Lenorah, Texas, is a senior at Grady High School. His Eagle project was the construction of 17 benches funded by Stanton Trade Days for the downtown sidewalk. He will be attending Austin College in Sherman, Texas, and studying premed.

Volunteer of the Year: Maria Saracho says donating her time is 'a calling'

Helping the helpless just seems to be in Maria Saracho's blood.
Not only does she work full-time for Children's Protective Services, but she volunteers more than 30 hours a week manning the Big Spring Victim Services hotline. And she has done such an outstanding job at that she was named Program Volunteer of the Year by the Texas Association for Sexual Assault.
Saracho, has volunteered her services to Victim Services for almost 10 years and has logged more than 5,900 hours for the agency.

Relay coming our way

One of the area's most anticipated events takes place this weekend at Blankenship Field.
Yes, it's time again for the Howard/Glasscock Relay For Life, which raises thousands of dollars for the fight against cancer.
How many dollars?
This year, organizers are hoping to raise $192,000.
The national theme is “Dream Big, Hope Big, Relay Big.”

The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 9 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. today:
• JOSHUA ANTHONY RODRIGUEZ, 20, of 1413 Wood, was arrested Sunday on charges of criminal mischief – more than $50 and less than $500 and public intoxication of a minor.
• ANDREW BRITO, 21, of 301 N.E. Eighth St., was arrested Sunday on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance.

Candidate forum set for Thursday

The Big Spring Area Chamber of Commerce will host a Meet the Candidate Forum at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Hall Center for the Arts.

The forum gives candidates an opportunity to introduce themselves prior to the May 11 city and school board elections.

“We're encouraging everyone to come out and meet each of the candidates,” said Debbye ValVerde, Chamber executive director.

ValVerde said each candidate will be allowed to speak for five minutes.

Housing concerns top county agenda

As interest in the expected Cline Shale oil boom continues to grow, Howard County commissioners will begin taking steps to prepare for the phenomenon during a special meeting Monday morning.

The court is expected to meet in an executive session with the Austin law firm Bickerstaff Heath Delgado Acosta LLP of Austin, which commissioners retained in early March. According to County Judge Mark Barr, they will be looking at ways to deal with the continued growth of RV and trailer parks within the county.

Rudolph John 'R.J.' Knocke

Rudolph John Knocke (R.J.) was born March 23, 1926 in Hermleigh, Texas to Erna and Rudolph Knocke.

He lived his childhood in Colorado City until 17 years of age. He was active in all sports and was very popular among all of his peers. When he was 17, he moved with his family to Beeville, Texas.

In 1944, he enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II in Germany and England. He later served in the Marines Reserve.

He married Doris Hunter in October 1946 in Colorado City, Texas. She preceded him in death Dec. 18, 1999.

Jessie Cardoso

Jessie Cardoso, 59, of Big Spring, died Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Midland Memorial Hospital. Vigil services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 15, 2013, at Myers & Smith Chapel with burial at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

She was born Aug. 24, 1953 in Big Spring, Texas to Juanita and Juan T. Parra. She lived most of her life in Big Spring, except for 20 years living in Dallas. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and was a homemaker.
