The bells will be ringing in the season for giving Friday.
Volunteers with the Salvation Army will spend some of their Black Friday soliciting for funds instead of shopping for door buster deals when the Salvation Army kicks off its Red Kettle campaign.
âAll the money we raise stays in the community,â said Lt. Missy Romack of the Salvation Army. âThis is a good time for us to raise money to help us during the year. We feed people every day. We give out groceries and provide residents with help paying utilities. We use that money every day to provide services to the community.â
Ray Turner, 74, of Big Spring, Texas died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 7:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Friday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cowboy Church in Barnhart, Texas. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Resthaven Cemetery in Barnhart, Texas.
A 19-year-old Big Spring man stands formally accused in the September fatal shooting of his girlfriend.
Dakota Anguiano was indicted on a first-degree charge of murder during Tuesday's session of the Howard County Grand Jury.
Anguiano, who is currently in custody at the county detention center, was indicted in connection with the shooting death of 17-year-old Abigail Valencia on Sept. 19 in Big Spring.
The turkeys have been cooked and preparations are nearing the final stages for the Salvation Army's annual Thanksgiving Day dinner.
As they have for the past several years, Salvation Army officials will open the agency's doors Thursday to anyone wanting to have a traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings. The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Salvation Army headquarters, 811 W. Fifth.
There's only one requirement people have to meet to enjoy the meal â an appetite.
Nell Grace Hart Parker, 89, of Big Spring died Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, in a local nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at the Philadelphia Primitive Baptist Church with Brother Jeff Harris, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.
Rumaldo Del Bosque, 86, of Big Spring, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at Scenic Mountain Medical Center. Private family services will be held at a later date.
Howard County's Road and Bridge Department may be pulling up stakes â literally â within the next few weeks.
At their Monday meeting, county commissioners unanimously voted to accept bids for the property that's currently home to the road and bridge department.
The property, located a block west of Lamesa Highway and south of Interstate 20, has attracted the attention of some business interests, County Judge Mark Barr said.
âWe've received inquiries on what it would take to buy the property,â Barr said.
Area residents can slide right into the Christmas holidays next week as volunteers to help sort and package the Salvation Army's Angel Tree donations in preparation for distribution.
Donated gifts for the more than 200 participants are expected to be dropped off at the Salvation Army in the next few weeks all of which must must sorted, wrapped and packaged.
Melvin "Mel" Brownfield, 70, of Big Spring, Texas, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at his residence. No services are planned at this time.
He was born June 27, 1943 in Lubbock, Texas.
Survivors include three brothers, Floyd Brownfield of Big Spring, Kenneth Brownfield of Lubbock and Donald Brownfield of May, Texas and several nieces and nephews.
