If you have unresolved warrants in the Crossroads area, you have plenty to fear in the coming weeks, as law enforcement agencies in Howard County and the surrounding areas get ready to conduct a warrant roundup.
Part of a statewide effort to help municipalities and other government agencies tackle the growing number of arrest warrants being issued, Big Spring Municipal Judge Tim Green said every effort has been made to contact those with warrants and get the matters cleared up before the handcuffs get slapped on March 2.
A 72-year-old Big Spring man who served as youth minister at a local church pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child in 118th District Court last week and accepted a 25-year sentence in a state jail facility.
Samuel Lee Lyte, 72, formerly of 1811 S. Lancaster, was indicted in November on charges of continuous sexual abuse of a child (first-degree felony), aggravated sexual abuse of a child (first-degree felony), indecency with a child (two counts, both second-degree felonies) and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence (third-degree felony).
The Howard County Sheriff's Office reported the following activity (74 prisoners are currently housed in the county jail):
â€¢ ANDREA ANCISCO, 31, was jailed on warrants charging assault-family violence, child safety seat violation and driving while license invalid.
â€¢ COREY DALE CHAMBERS, 43, was jailed on a charge of tampering with governmental records-insurance document.
â€¢ VIRGINIA L. FRANCO, 47, was jailed on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
The Big Spring Fire Department/Emergency Medical Service reported the following activity:
Jose Munoz, 91, of Big Spring, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Memorial Park.
A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel.
He was born March 13, 1921, in Marfa, Texas and married Maria Refugia Martinez Dec. 31, 1943 in Big Spring. She preceded him in death Sept. 18, 1977.
Fernando Rodriguez, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 in a local hospital. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
Daniel Vera Flores, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013 at his residence. His services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Big Spring.
Officials with the city of Big Spring say filings for the May 11 election have been moving along slowly as the March 1 deadline for political hopefuls to file their candidacy approaches.
The mayoral seat, along with the District 5 seat on the council, will be decided by the May 11 contest.
Incumbent Mayor Tommy Duncan has indicated he will not seek a second term in the office, saying he never intended to serve more than one term in the position.
The Big Spring Police Department reported the following activity between 7 a.m. Monday and 7 a.m. today:
â€¢ RONALD STANLEY HASELBY, 62, of Carlsbad, N.M., was arrested Monday on a charge of urinating in a public place.
â€¢ CHRISTOPHER LEE BEDFORD, 32, of 2513 Dow, was arrested Monday on a charge of driving while license suspended/invalid with a previous conviction.
â€¢ CRIMINAL MISCHIEF was reported in the 1100 block of E. 13th Street.
â€¢ THEFT was reported:
In the 7000 block of N. Service Road.
In the 3600 block of W. Highway 80.
Five Big Spring Independent School District students are hoping to spell their way to Washington D.C.
The five spellers will represent their campuses and BSISD when they participate in the Scripps-Howard Regional Spelling Bee, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday on the Midland College campus.
The students qualified for Saturday's event by winning spelling contests at their respective campuses, said Robin Ritchey, BSISD spelling bee coordinator.
The five campus winners are:
Alvin Dudley Jenkins, 88, passed away Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at his residence in Big Spring, Texas. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Trinity Memorial Park Chapel with Mike Couch of First Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be held at Myers & Smith Funeral Home from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013.
