Fed indictment served on BSPD officer

Big Spring Police Officer Mark Castaneda has been served with a federal felony indictment by the U.S.Department of Justice, the local police depaartment has confirmed.

Big Spring Police Det. Sgt. Tony Everett, public information officer, said the felony indictment, delivered Tuesday, “stems from allegations on Mr. Cantaneda from a previous employer, not the Big Spring Police Department.”

Everett said BSPD is cooperating fully with the investigation and will continue to do so.

Lt. Fitzgibbons files for JP post

A long-time Howard County law enforcement officer has tossed his hat into the ring for the justice of the peace, precent 1, place 2 position.

Robert Fitzgibbons filed his intent to run with the Republican chairman Wednesday. The 54-year-old lifetime resident of Howard County is a lieutenant in the Big Spring Police Department patrol division.

“I’ve worked with the city for 30 years,” he said. “I’ve been with the police department for 29 years. I have an extensive law enforcement background, so I believe that qualifies me to sit in that position.

Kickin’ good time at C City Opry

COLORADO CITY — Curtis Potter and Justin Trevino will join Shady Mitchell and the Kickin’ Kountry Band to headline tonight’s performance of the C City Opry Show.

“We do a country music show at the Colorado City Opera House loosely based on the old Hee Haw show,” said Debby Mitchell, assistant manager. “We put a little comedy in, recruit local talent and from time to time bring in older country stars.

Elvira Gandar, 73, of Big Spring, Texas, died Sunday Nov. 17, 2013 at University Medical Center in Lubbock. Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Myers & Smith Chapel. Funeral services will be Thursday 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mount Olive Memorial Park.

Eric Kelly, 26, of Dallas, Texas, was called Home by our Heavenly Father, Friday, Nov. 15, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel in Big Spring.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, at the funeral home.
Eric was born Dec. 21,1986, in Midland. He graduated from Big Spring High School, and then Howard College with an associate’s degree.

Charles “Charlie” Thompson

Charles “Charlie” Thompson, 73, of Big Spring, Texas, died Sunday Nov. 17, 2013, at his residence.
The family will receive friends Wednesday 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Myers & Smith Chapel with Danny Wright officiating.
Burial will follow at Coahoma Cemetery.

He was born Dec.14, 1939, in Carlsbad, N.M., to Louise and James B. “Jay” Thompson.

He married Carolyn Gring March 29, 1958, in Kermit. They came to Big Spring in 1972 from Kermit.

Eva Sue Anderson

Eva Sue “Susie” Anderson, 88, formerly of Big Spring, Texas, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, in Perris, Calif. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, at the Peace Chapel at Trinity Memorial Park.

Susie was born Aug. 27, 1925, in Potisi, Texas, and married Wilford Edward “Pete” Anderson Aug. 12, 1942, in Big Spring, Texas. They were married for 39 years. Pete preceded her in death in 1981.

PD investigates home invasions

Big Spring police officers are investigating a pair of home invasion robberies that left one man hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his right leg.

Police responded to the report of an aggravated robbery at 12:39 a.m. Tuesday at 1504 Tucson.
“Upon arrival, the complainant advised she had left her home for a few minutes around 12:23 a.m. When she returned, her 14-year-old son advised her three armed males had forced their way into the residence,” said Det. Sgt. Tony Everett, BSPD information officer.

Phillips named assistant superintendent at BSSH

Big Spring State Hospital Superintendent Lorie Dunnam named Traci Phillips as the hospital’s new assistant superintendent.

Phillips assumed the role Nov. 1 — a position previously held by Dunnam, who was named the hospital’s superintendent Sept. 1 upon the retirement of longtime superintendent Ed Moughon.
